Thinking about Karasu owning pet birds and teaching you how to feed and pet them. Them learning your name beause of how often he talks to you and his embarassed blush as one parrots some of his musings to you. when tabito was 6, he’d run laps around the pond in that park by his house for hours. he was an energetic boy. he’d only stopped once because he tripped on something hidden in the taller grasses and scraped his knee. sniffling and tearful (no, that isn’t the last time he cried, but it’s none of your business anyways), he rose to his knees to look back at what he’d stumbled over.

a beady-eyed bundle of black and yellow fluff looked back at him, unharmed. next to it laid the remnants of a nest, or so it seemed. wide-eyed and bated breath, tabito turned over the heap of sticks and soft gray feathers.

empty. no broken eggshells. uninhabited.

he turned to the duckling, still standing in the tall grass, watching him with an avian curiosity.

“… so, where’s the rest of ‘ya?”

tabito is 18. still a youth by many standards of age, but the way he’s been visiting that quaint little pond in the park all these years certainly makes him feel a bit older than he is.

he still hates himself a little for accidentally telling you about this habit. probably thinks i’m lame now or somethin’, he’d thought.

to his relief, your bashful “can i… meet them?” gave him hope that he hadn’t scared you away quite yet.

the air is crisp. the cold breeze threatens to nip his nose and redden his cheeks and he hates it, but his hand intertwined with yours in the pocket of his coat makes a lasting warmth spread from the tips of his fingers to the ends of his ears. your warmth shields him from the chilly autumn morning, though if you inquired about it he’d probably make some dumb excuse about how s’just cold, idiot.

he’s lecturing you about why you shouldn’t feed ducks bread, going on and on about how s’got no nutritional value, and attracts more rats than ducks anyway.

in his other hand he holds a bag of grapes, purchased yesterday. he bought them on his walk home after you asked to come with him today.

as you walk, you can’t help but wonder if he’s given them names yet, so you ask. he pauses for a moment. huh… i really haven’t named ‘em yet?

apricot, jelly bean, peanut, skips, periwinkle, shark, and daffodil (or daffy for short).

he smiles to himself as he goes through the pictures on his phone from earlier today. your laughter is a melody in his ears as a video of you starts to play.

you’re sitting cross-legged in the grass, nevermind the cold morning dew, holding peanut and apricot in your hands as shark and periwinkle attempt to climb you. their siblings chirp happily, enthused by the new friend.

he hides his smile in his palm as the video continues playing.

cute… guess i should start bringin’ ‘em more often.
