“Hello,” called Till, “Hello, can you hear me?”

The more upright one made a wet, raspy noise, and Till’s hand tightened on the gun's stock. Then the guy did it again, and this time it sounded more like he was just clearing his throat. “Christ, of course we can hear you,” he said, low and hoarse but entirely human. “You could wake the dead with that voice.”
