I'm still early in the podcast but god I really wanna know if there's some kind of backstory angst reason why Gideon carries these shackles on his wrists or if they're just for the aesthetic

Not to underplay Zheng's formidable skills, but I just realized part of the reason the tricks Stede used in his duel with Izzy didn't work on her. (And no, it's not that Izzy is a shitty pirate.)

When Stede dueled Izzy, they were still in Stede-land, where he had full plot armor and the world seemed to bend to his will so he could live his idealized version of piracy.

When he dueled Zheng, he'd killed Ned Low, he'd stepped out of Stede-land and into the real world of piracy.

He's gone from muppet to human, with all the gravity that entails.
