Tadashi Yamaguchi X Reader - Tumblr Posts
"Does it seem like something's up with Yamaguchi?" the third years ask each other as they watch him sulk out of the gym.
"He hasn't been himself lately," Ennoshita confirms. Others are about to add their own observations when Kageyama cuts in.
"It's cuz he got dumped."
"Bakeyama! You didn't have to say it like that!" scolds Hinata and the setter gives him a derisive look.
"But it's true."
Hinata throws a bottle at him. "You could be more considerate!"
"You can't even spell considerate," he snaps, launching a ball in Hinata's direction. The second and third years gather on a water break watching the devolving spectacle of first years but it's not the fighting pair that holds most of their attention.
It's Tsukishima.
The blonde, who's normally adding salt to the wounds Hinata and Kageyama inflict on each other, is sitting in a far corner of the gym arms wrapped around knees pulled up to his chest.
"Do you think..." murmurs Asahi. Tsukishima gets up and silently leaves: the third and second years exchange worried glances.
"Door for you, honey," your mom calls upstairs and you reluctantly trudge down to see
"Tsukishima." You scowl. "What are you doing here?"
Standing on your porch in his practice clothes he looks oddly...humbled. "I need to talk to you."
"About what?" You cross your arms without inviting him in.
"Yamaguchi." He has trouble meeting your eye as he carefully chooses his words. "Why did you break up with him?"
Your eyes narrow. "Because of you, obviously." He had the decency to blush even if it's faint. "I can't stand you or being around you."
"But you weren't dating me-"
"Obviously, smartass," you snap, the pent-up emotion rushing out. "But I was dating your best friend and I couldn't stand being around you. So rather than forcing the guy I'm in love with to choose between me and his best friend I ended it. I wouldn't give him an ultimatum!"
"And you think I would?!" he demands, angry at the implication.
"Of course you would! Because rather than admit you actually care about Yamaguchi or, heaven forbid, acknowledge that he's your best friend, you put him in a terrible position!"
Tsukishima's jar clenches as his own words echo in his mind.
If I'm that upsetting then just don't be around me any more.
You admonishingly shake your head. "You know, the jaded attitude doesn't actually protect yourself from getting hurt, you're just ensuring that it happens."
You graciously give him a long minute to answer but he doesn't.
You're not surprised.
"Be grateful that Yamaguchi thinks you're good enough to be friends with him." You give him one last hard look before closing the door without a goodbye.
Sugawara strolls down the first years' hall... No intention to intervene, he's just curious... And he catches a glimpse of Tsukishima talking to Yamaguchi. It gives the veteran setter a glimmer of hope that his kouhai are working things out, whatever's going on between them.
You're more bothered by Tsukishima's visit yesterday than you'd like to admit. It's been hard enough denying yourself the joy of being with Yamaguchi but seeing him today after the blonde's visit has made the hole in your chest burn. You can't even focus to get your shoes on.
All you want to do is get out of this miserable school and your stupid fingers won't cooperate! You're about to give up and walk home barefoot when there's a timid call of your name.
You take slow, easy breaths as he walks up. "Hey Tadashi..." you gulp, trying to hold your voice steady, "what's up?"
He's red under his freckles and looks...jittery. "Tsuki told me he talked to you."
Your eyes widen; now you're jittery. "He...He did?"
Yamaguchi nods with a gulp like he's holding himself back. "Y-Yeah. He said I should talk to you...because maybe breaking up with me wasn't...wasn't what you really wanted?"
"It's not," you whisper despite the promise to yourself not to make Tadashi choose.
He smiles and takes a tentative step forward. "Do you...Do you want to be together again?" When you don't respond he rubs the back of his neck, misreading the silence. "S-Sorry...maybe I should've--"
"Stop being stupid." Tsukishima comes around the corner. Anger flares in your belly and you prepare to rip him apart for being such an asshole to Tadashi but he's looking
At you.
Your words start to snarl but Yamaguchi sternly cuts him off.
"Tsuki. That's the opposite of an apology."
Surprise wipes the anger from your face.
"Sorry." Tsukishima gives you a flat look...it's not expressly apologetic but it's not openly hostile. "I'm going to work on my attitude."
Hinata and Kageyama sprint past screaming like feral children and Tsukishima amends "my attitude toward you two."
Yamaguchi snickers and the sound feels like sunshine and raindrops in your chest. He grins when he sees you smiling.
"I love you, Tadashi."
The greenette's eyes pop and he flushes a bright red as Tsukishima smirks.
He mutters "told you so" and dances out of the way when you swat at him. "See you at practice," he says with the hint of a smile as he strolls off to practice.
Yamaguchi tenderly takes your hand and kisses the back of it.
"I love you, too."
