I’m not saying his actions were moral! I’m saying he’s a young man that made a mistake. That mistake was awful, obviously and met its consequences. Losing his quirk and going to jail, living with the knowledge that he ended up everything his only parental figure ever worked for. His actions fucked up his whole family, assuming he saw the mafia as one (i think he mentioned it idk). I hate the “born evil” tropes, they’re usually badly created (afo was okay, he was a good story pusher). That’s why all I’m saying is that this man have an open room for changing himself.
And while he did the experiments for himself in some part I do think there’s also something about how his world view was and how he believed it’s good for more people. Like, giving up one person for the case.
Again, his ways were shitty. He hurt a child. He was raised by mafia, his moral compass is for sure screwed up. I’m not denying nor protecting him. Story and character build wise it would be boring, from my point of view, to have him not progress over his past self. Ofc, looking at mha as a whole, I assume there will be no redemption bc the manga isn’t that deep. I just recognize a potential in his character.
Did you read the manga/watch the anime at all, Pops is an old school yakuza and while I’m not denying the yakuza do fucked up shit, in canon Pops was like “hey, how about no- Fucking STOP” to Kai’s eugenics bullshit and even threatened to kick Kai out for having the gall to experiment on a child/his GRAND-DAUGHTER.
He’s not an uwu product of a broken home, he had a normal upbringing and Pops clearly stated that yakuza don’t get un-initiated people (i.e. normal poeple in the community they are a part of) involved in Clan business even if they do stuff like insult the Brotherhood. Kai could have completely ignored the whole “let’s bring the yakuza back into power by abusing a literal child and trying to rule via genetic supremacy” schtick- He CLEARLY went to school like a regular kid and wasn’t indoctrinated into the life of a made-man since BIRTH since that’s literally not how the yakuza works.
Like, barring all the shit I know about Asian organized crime, Kai chose to be obsessed by that unsubstantiated “Quirks= Disease from rodents” theory since he read about it, the yakuza didn’t tie him to a chair and force the concept into his head.
Horikoshi doesn’t really get deep, he introduces concepts that could go deeper and then shies away from it or plain forgets it was a thing he came up with, but Overhaul doesn’t really need a redemption arc- Am I interested to see what happens now that he’s outta prison? Yeah, hell, I used to roleplay Overhaul and greatly enjoyed exploring his character, but I’m not going to sit there and defend the guy or pretend he’s got ‘potential to reform’. Honestly I find the concept of ‘reform’ more boring and tropey than just acknowledging he did fucked up shit for what he thought was a solid goal/repayment.

True, i didn’t bring up the boss saying all that bc I didn’t feel it was necessary. And I said it didn’t i, bnha isn’t that deep. 90% there won’t be redemption just fun fights. I’m just theorizing bc its fun lol.
Like, I’m aware that I’m overanalysing.
Since we have that explained, I still think it would be fun to see a redemption in the show. And I still think, at this moment, he got best qualifications for that

His morals are wrong because of the yakuza. Horikoshi isn’t deep, because *I* recognize potential. yeah ok.
I wasn’t annoyed about this until you busted out the condescending “Honey, sweetheart, baby” bullshit, so, uh. fuck off? Kai made a conscious decision to do these awful things. Nobody, especially not myself or Alice, ever said “Kai was born evil”. You can write all the meta and fanfic your heart desires, but IDFK why you somehow expect to not get a response when you reply to someone’ else’s post being excruciatingly tone deaf and lacking in reading comprehension and context skills.
