They don't outright ask Danny if his a Martian. So, they see this very likely Martian kid ask thousands of questions about how Mars use to be to J'onn and assume he's like Clark. A Martian raised on earth, one that's eager to learn about his lost culture. And so the misunderstanding extends.
They don't think he's Kryptonian, or a Meta.
