Graham Folger attempts to do the same thing, to live in fear but ward away the true danger, but he fails.

It tells you clearly that although it might be *possible* to escape unscathed, it is incredibly difficult, and even the best plans can fail. The Fears are not something to be messed around with, because you never know whether your attempts to keep yourself safe will actually continue to hold up.
