hi neb! i was wondering if you could recommend any tamilian (or other south asian) musicians/bands/solo artists? especially if they include a lot of cultural aspects in their music and have vocals that aren't in english. thank you + love you!
hi!! really good question because most south asian music comes from films so it's a little harder to find stuff that's independent or from bands. here are a few:
masala coffee- primarily folk, blues, pop, and rock, all in either tamil or malayalam. they have a cool indie rock sound to them i really like!
arivu- hip hop and rap, a lot of social commentary because he's dark skinned, dalit (lowest part of the caste system) and anti-caste. personally love the track called anti indian because yeah man me too <3
the casteless collective- chennai based tamil-indie band! arivu is a part of the lineup for this band right now actually. really good dalit music, nearly all of it is against caste inequality and hindu supremacy. honestly wouldn’t dream of giving tamil recs and not recommending this band, i love their motive and there are plenty of cultural aspects in their music. one of the styles they draw influence from is gaana, a folk genre which originated in the poorer neighborhoods of tamilnadu and is now being used as a political tool in music.
shilpa natarajan- some of her songs are in english, but some are in tamil as well. really strong indie pop vibes, it literally sounds like english indie pop but in tamil (therefore making it sexier).
gowry lekshmi- malayalam, alternative rock with folk influences! out of everyone here, i feel like she has the best example of combining carnatic vocals with non-classical music. i love the atmosphere of her stuff.
thanks for the question! this stuff isn’t the easiest to find but i hope more independent south asian music is accessible in the future!

Phew here I go. This is the official launch of the Tolkien Podcast Series I’ll be doing. For this first episode, I recorded alone. I will be reaching out to people who expressed interest in being guest in the next episode, so that we can get together and plan when a good time and date would be to all sit down and record.
This episode discusses what I liked and didn’t like about the Hobbit movies.
Give it a listen, and let me know how I did! Advice and tips or any suggestions are welcomed as well!
This is so far the only Tolkien podcast that is lead by a black woman that I know of, so I welcome all of your support and love for my channel!
So give me a listen, like, and subscribe.
oddly specific aesthetic playlists
for when you’re overcome with the spirit of a 19th century lesbian watching a girl take off her petticoat for the first time
girls with dark hair and even darker eyes, empty marbled halls echoing with memories of centuries past, ancient leather bound books written in dead languages, thick sweaters to overcome the persistent chill that unfailingly seeps through the stone walls
you’ve been wandering around the old woods behind your house for a few hours now and you’re not sure if you’ve stumbled into a fey realm or not, but either way you’re like 90% sure you saw a dryad
for when you’re really feeling that morally grey witch vibe. just make sure to wait at least 10 minutes and cool down before hexing/cursing anyone
a nostalgic set of songs from my 2000s french childhood
time to long for the touch of another human!! let’s get emo (mostly mitski and also very gay)

Dark academia playlist
‘Autumn Leaves’ by The Walters
‘Sweet Apocalypse’ by Lambert
‘Bide Your Time’ by Courteeners
‘Graveyard Whistling’ by Nothing But Thieves
‘Les Mémoires Blessées’ by Dark Sanctuary

‘Achilles Come Down’ by Gang of Youths
Songs with Hamlet energy:
I killed myself but I didn’t die by Ezra herself it’s just exactly how I characterise him “and my mom came in she was having trouble trying to speak / she could see that her boy was some sort of freak”
Dreams by Fleetwood Mac is the hamlet/Ophelia breakup song change my mind
Goodbye my danish sweetheart by mitski like...yeah “danish” but if this isnt hamlet to Horatio as he’s dying then what is
15 step by Radiohead - “you used to be alright / what happened”...also bodysnatchers
Space and the woods by late of the pier...same vibe as I killed myself
Enjoy the silence by Depeche mode but this is just because it reminds me of “the rest is silence” so whenever I reread this gets stuck in my head. That’s the only reason but it slaps so it’s ok
Running up that hill by Kate Bush but let’s be real this song is perfect for a lot of things
Bonus: hope is a dangerous thing by lana is my Ophelia projecting onto Ophelia song

like black people are present in every single fucking genre and scene and popularized and straight up created several but people are so fucking hell bent on finding every possible excuse to not engage with their music because its easier than trying to confront their own racism. like okay well if its truly just a disinterest in most rap music then surely you listen to black artists in other genres right? who am i fucking kidding. of course you dont.
