I had never heard of this James Somerton guy before Hbomberguy and Todd both made their videos, but from people I've talked to this sounds like #ChangeTheChannel for gay people.
Like, a popular YouTuber with tons of fans has been revealed to be a lying, thieving piece of crap, leading to his platform being destabilized and his entire fandom falling into disarray after the reveal? My sympathies, I know how that feels.
The hbomberguy video is amazing, but the fact that he had James Somerton on the ropes and TODD IN THE FUCKING SHADOWS came out of nowhere with the steel chair is batshit way to begin the end of 2023.
just finished the todd in shadows vid after the hbomberguy one and oof.
i had never heard of somerton before but the harm he’s clearly done to the community can be seen in the way he said “the boring gays survived” the comment from a watched todd highlights made me cry when i paused to read it. just yuck, i hate plagiarism and i hate ppl pushing their own narratives.
can i also say another thing i disliked thats like no a big deal in regards to the other claims?
i hate how somerton delivers his lines with the energy of someone giving a presentation for the first time. some of the clips shown from his vids you can literally see him reading the script for the first time. how is that meant to be engaging? when you truly know something and are passionate about it your words flow naturally even when you stumble, and the inflections aren’t rehearsed because you mean the words you are saying. it just highlighted his anger when the only parts he seemed impassioned is when he would come for the “straight women” in his comment sections. like hello misogyny.
ugh this is why i’m always sceptical of video essayists on youtube because so many of them just sound like faux intellectuals. its really not hard to cite your sources and actually enriches the conversation because you give ppl the ability to research for themselves further. never trust someone who says they are the beginning and end of a discussion.
Could someone just like explain the Hbomberguy, Todd, and James Somerton thing to me???? All I know is:
- Hbomberguy posted a video. Something about it being 4 hours long and railed into Somerton for not citing sources?
- Somerton deleted his YouTube
- Something about lifting things from Patreon?? I don’t understand that??
- Somerton said things that made people mad. Maybe connected to videos or tweets made /after/ Hbomberguy’s video?

As someone who's always been a huge fan of Todd In The Shadows, I'm 100% on this.
To put in summary, James is basically this, but UNIRONICALLY:
something that i didn't think needed to be said but should be said in light of the hbomberguy video:
just because somerton didn't outright say "i hate women" DOES NOT MAKE HIM NOT A MISOGYNIST. it is the internal beliefs that make it that way !! it is still generalizing and saying not nice things about women !!!
this goes for other things too, not just somerton!! it doesn't have to be outright to be wrong.

Top 40 format radio really has been on life support since at least 2010. Thanks Todd in the Shadows for presenting radio's newest low. Napster wounded the music industry and Spotify put it in a coffin.
Todd in the Shadows finally justified my reluctance to watch Vision Quest on his Twitter by comparing RAD (1986) to it.
Yeah... it just seems dull and it’s not about good wrestling and by that I mean WWE. Hell, Vision Quest would be improved by being about MMA.
One thing that's starting to really get to me with the James Somerton stuff is a real strong undercurrent of disdain toward his fans. And yeah, I was one of them. A good scam artist isn't as easy to spot as y'all seem to think. You forget that you have all the information right now. Two days ago most of you had never heard of him and it would have kept going. Anyone can fall for a scam, nobody is immune. I would love to have had whatever resources you guys think we all should magically know about so I could have kept my sad $5 a month I really needed but thought was going to something worthwhile. Some of us can only devote so much energy into things and when you have no idea whatsoever that something is amiss of course you're not going to go digging for sources, why would you when everything is fine as far as you know? I really wish I could have seen the dissenting opinions on him but for many, many reasons that aren't just that the dissenting voices weren't widely circulating at the time all I had was the thought every now and again that "huh that doesn't seem right" and then go on with my day. And I think that happened to a lot of us. So yeah. Say what you gotta say about Somerton, he has more than earned it with the damage he's caused, but maybe don't shit so hard on his former fans because that is going to be you someday with something, it happens to everyone sooner or later.
