Ron DeSantis is at it again: on May 2, 2024, DeSantis signed HB 1291 into law. This bill prohibits educational discussions about systemic and institutional racism, sexism, oppression, and privilege to adults participating in teacher training preparation programs. With very broad implications, it censors diversity, undermines academic freedom and endangering the quality of K-12 education. There are lasting consequences to what you teach (or refuse to teach) your children.

Florida Alert: This week, we want to draw your attention to a new memo distributed by Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles stating transgender Floridians can no longer change the gender marker on their IDs. Transgender people in Florida are no longer allowed to change the gender marker on their IDs, which includes state IDs and driver's licenses. The DHSMV's deputy executive director, Robert Kynoch, says in the extreme message that someone "misrepresenting one’s gender, understood as sex, on a driver's license constitutes fraud". Any resident of Florida who changes their gender marker could face criminal and civil penalties such as losing their license. The memo was only sent to county tax collectors, which is where Floridians get their IDs - citizens were not allowed to give input, or even publicly notified of the change. While this is not a bill itself, it may be paving the way for related anti-trans bills that Florida Republicans are trying to pass this year. This new rule is yet another assault on the privacy of citizens and sets a dangerous precedent.” The same blue banner and red circle are at the top but smaller, next to the TFP logo.
