When she was 10, her mother divorced her abusive father and gained full custody of Amoya and her brothers. They moved to New Orleans, where her mother worked as a hair and makeup artist. Frequently accompanying her mother on set, Amoya was introduced to the world of modeling and sometimes served as a model herself. This exposure sparked her passion for modeling, which eventually became her career. Struggles: Amoya struggles with OCD, anxiety, and depression. She began treatment at 15 and was prescribed medication for her depression, but she stopped taking it a few months later, feeling it was no longer necessary. Backstory: Amoya Lucia Ini Shaw grew up in Jamaica with her mother, father, and three older brothers, never having met her mother's side of the family until her parents divorced when she was 12. She noticed her parents' strained relationship and her mother's bruises when she was 5. Still, she didn't understand the significance until later when she turned 7, her father subjecting her to sexual and verbal abuse, leaving her traumatized. After the divorce, they (her mother and brothers) moved to New Orleans, where her mother worked as a makeup artist, exposing Amoya to the entertainment industry, which sparked her interest in modeling. In New Orleans, she met her mother's side of the family. Despite language barriers with her extended family, having only spoken patwa in Jamaica, she adapted quickly and began learning Croatian and Creol, and English after entering school. Amoya excelled academically despite the language barriers and mental struggles, eventually pursuing studying psychology and sociology in college while continuing her modeling career.
