Thanks for the tag, @willtheweaver (here)!

Since I'm still doing edits to Supernova Initiative and have yet to write more snippets I can post without spoiling the whole thing, I'll go with a future snippet from my superhero WIP Mutant Inquiries!

TW. Absent parent/parental abandonment, mentioned addictive substance (superpower serum), implied teen delinquency, and overall a generally shitty narcissitic mom

(Context, Elijah Donovvan's absent mother, Janet, stops by his apartment to pay her sons - him and Rhett - a visit. Elijah is less than thrilled about it, for a myriad of reasons, and leaves for his vigilante duties after telling her some much-needed truths.)

"What are you doing here?" Elijah asked, deadpan, as he held the apartment door ajar, effectively blocking the woman from entering.

She huffed out a chuckle, maliciously oblivious, "Isn't it obvious?" The woman took a step forward, placing a hand on his shoulder, "I'm visiting my sons."

Her gaze grew suddenly ice cold when he brushed her off, but Elijah couldn't care less. "Hm." He hummed, sticking his chin out, "Well, that's funny, 'cause I wonder why." The teen narrowed his eyes, bitter "After all these years, what the fuck do you want? You left. I thought it was pretty damn clear you wanted shit else to do with us."

Janet gasped, "Now, don't be rude, Elijah. " Her voice was authoritative, nagging. Just as he remembered. "You know nothing of what I went through, and this tone you're using is, quite frankly, offensive-"

At that, Elijah cut her off, "Oh, excuse me. I'm offending you now?! Sure." He scoffs, this time taking a step forward of his own, "Cause you were being the 'Parent Of The Year' when you walked out on your husband and two sons." His voice was sharply sarcastic, dripping venom. "Rhett's in the fucking hospital again, and you want to talk about 'my tone'?"

Janet crossed her arms over her chest.

"It's not my fault that boy has such an awful taste in friends. Now you're just being unreasonable."

Elijah pinched the bridge of his nose with a huff, "Well, maybe Rhett wouldn't be so hooked on that damn super-serum if mother dearest had stuck around after his twelfth birthday. Just a thought. " The teen narrowed his eyes, "He idolized you, do you know that? And quite honestly, watching my big brother get involved with gangs because he wanted escapism isn't exactly a kid's dream life y'know. But it was the life I had."

Janet's gaze turned soft as if understanding. He knew she wasn't, and he could practically see the gears turning and scheming happening inside her mind, "Look. I'll admit my choice wasn't ideal. I was young," She smiles, waving a hand outwards as if it could dismiss all of her wrongs, "Everyone makes mistakes when they're young - it's human to want to experience another, wilder side of life at times. But I'm here now, and I am family." She tried to push past him and walk into the apartment. Elijah didn't move his arm from the threshold, holding her back, "You should respect that."

"No, you're not my family." Elijah bit out with a dark chuckle that sounded like anything but a chuckle, "Dad is my family - he was everything you never cared to be. Rhett is my family, for all his faults and trouble, at least he was here. Is here." He shouldered past her, closing the door behind him and locking it. Elijah adjusted his backpack on his shoulder and started walking down the corridor, "You are less family to me than the next-door neighbor."

He chuckled as he heard the sound of her testing the doorknob to see if it would open, followed by the click-clacking of her heels on the polished concreted as she took off after him, and spun around nonchalantly, walking backward to end the conversation before another started, "If you excuse me, I've crime to stop and a cybertech industry to take down. Don't pester the doorman on your way out."

And with that, he turned around once again, stopping by the elevator doors and pressing the button to call it to this floor.
