the veins in his left hand bulged slightly as he gripped the steering wheel, desperately trying to keep his eyes on the road while simultaneously trying to serenade you. his right hand clutched yours, bringing it up to his mouth occasionally as a microphone. his hair was messy and down, still a little damp from his shower. he had come home from practice a little upset, his line shots weren’t landing the way he wanted them to. so he grabbed your hand and asked you to go for a drive with him, just wanting to clear his head. so here you were, cruising down a random street while he belted out the lyrics to you. he glances over, making sure your smile is just as big as his. he brings your hand up to his mouth, pressing a kiss to it as he stares forwards at the road. “i love you.” he laughs a bit as he speaks, his earlier demeanour nowhere to be seen as he exudes a happiness you’ve never seen before. he usually didn’t bounce back so quickly, typically taking at least a couple hours to sort through his emotions. but there was just something different going on tonight. maybe it was the way you didn’t even hesitate for a second when he asked you to come with him, maybe it was the smile on your face as he sung to you, or maybe it was those words you said to him when he got home, “i’m still proud of you.” it was probably a combination of all three, and the knowing. knowing he’s never going to have a girl like you ever again.
