we do all have a bit of a laugh at the fact that Monty seemed to make a massive effort to not give two shits about anyone except Edwin, and it does feel true most of the time. yet...
... he asked Esther about Crystal's fate too?
... and he went with "them," did he? if he was only thinking of Edwin, he would have surely just said "him," right? interesting...

is that Monty cares
and would like to make friends with the rest of the gang
(maybe even including Charles)
but realizes that the others would blow his cover too easily
they'd take an interest and ask normal modern teenager things like
what music he likes to listen to
or what his plans are for after high school
and he's invested all his (limited!) prep time in a cover story targeted to one person
who is unlikely to ask much about his supposed modern teenage lifestyle
so he doesn't have any answers
so he avoids getting to know the rest of them more closely
so that they don't find out
