WINE Is Not An Emulator - Tumblr Posts

Hey! I wouldn’t mind switching from Windows to Linux on my personal computer (been using Ubuntu in several programming jobs I’ve had, that’s the one I’m most familiar with) but the videogames ;____; Is it hard to get videogames working on Linux?

Video games are hit or miss. You can find a lot of info on if a certain game will work by going to protondb.com. Notable incompatibilities include: Genshin Impact, Rainbow 6 Siege, & Valorant all because of their anticheat. That said, huge strides have been made with Proton and Wine, which are compatibility layers for windows apps running on linux. This is what has enabled the Steam Deck, which is a linux-based console, to thrive.

In the event a game doesn’t work out of the box, either natively or through steam’s Proton, check the protondb entry for it. It’ll probably have some tinker steps to get it working.
