Bloody hell, The Zone of Interest was a film to remember. And wish I'd never seen. Simultaneously.
I have so many thoughts and none of them are coherent... except that I feel like an accomplice.
Amazing film direction. It showed the humanity.. in the naz1s. So often films and media produced about ww2 make the naz1s seem like these demonic inhuman creatures and it's rare (and terrifying) to see them presented in such a benign and, dare I say, relatable, way.
If anyone watched this film and wasn't aware it was about the ww2 concentration camps/weren't aware the holocaust happened; likely you wouldn't even realise. Instead, you'd watch the film and probably get bored with the mundanity of it all.
The cross over at the end with the present day cleaning of Auschwitz had me baffled, and then shaking. Jonathan Glazer did a fantastic job of showing the humanity in a monstrous person, and making the viewer reflect upon their own ability to disconnect from actions by writing them off as βworkβ.
