X Hispanic Reader - Tumblr Posts

Something that always makes me cringe without fail is when authors on here write a Hispanic reader but with the most basic google translate sentences. I’m a no sabo kid, born and raised in a mixed white-Mexican household. A little part of me DIES when inaccurate stereotypes of Hispanic/latin people are portrayed and inaccurate representation of the language and the vernacular of our language. I don’t mind if people want to write for Hispanic readers - please feel free! but do not consult just google translate for help or have a character randomly insert Spanish into a completely English conversation - it’s lazy and poor writing. Please just review and put effort and research into your writing if you are writing about a culture or group that is not yours.

Furthermore - the fetishization of the Spanish language is horrible and I wish people would stop. Stop writing things like “he was so overcome with pleasure he slipped into his native tongue”. Most people who are experienced or just know about sexual pleasure know that when it over takes you - unless you are inarticulate in the language you were speaking before hand(most cases English) you are not likely to “slip into your native tongue” just from pleasure. Maybe in some cases - however still not that often. I’m glad that characters such as Miguel from ATSV are bringing more representation and diversity into the fandom but please know the boundaries for your smut before you start typing something like that. Because I know for me, nothing makes me exit off of a fic faster than seeing something like that especially when it’s of my own culture and my parents native language.
