He had always wanted to grow old with him. It hits him now that it will never happen. His husband is gone. The letter was hard to read through his tears, but he was able to make out the main consensus. Loki was dead.
Perhaps he was supposed to cry and scream for him, for the pain he felt. He was always one for the dramatics. But at this moment, he had no strength at all. His clothes pillowed beneath him as he sank to his knees, holding a hand to his mouth. No sounds came out, but he was worried they would. His eyes flickered between the words on the paper. It seemed his manner of death was written, but he was not about to read that. He wasn’t able to.
He was alone now. He had run away from his lands because his parents wouldn't dare let the prince marry the adopted son of Odin. But his love ran deep for him, so off he ran. He was no longer welcome in his old home. At the same time, the people of Odin never liked Loki very much. He was seen as a tyrant, one with little power, but a tyrant nonetheless. With these opinions, most didn’t respect Y/N much either.
Being alone never worried him before, when he knew his husband was alive and safe, or as safe as he could get. As alone as he was, he was never truly alone. But now the word seemed to echo in his mind. He felt sick. Why did his husband have to die? Why did Loki have to die?
Within the next week, he couldn't stand the stares and glares from the people around the castle. He needed to find Thor, the only one who was truly happy for the married couple. And he knew exactly where he was. He needed him to hold him and tell him what to do. He needed to not be alone anymore.
With a cloak wrapped around him, he sneaked from the castle. His steps were well-thought and quiet as he made his way to the Bifrost. His eyes scanned the roads for any people out at this hour. As late as it was, people always walked the square. Surprisingly, he made it to the Observatory without hassle. His fist knocked upon the door to Heimdall’s bedroom. A loud bang was heard, but the door opened. He squinted from the new source of light.
“Heimdall? Are you alright?” His hand, which was previously nursing his head, paused and he looked up from the ground.
“Lord? What are you doing up at this hour? And why are you here?” Whilst they hadn’t spoken in a few years (since the wedding), Heimdall knew exactly who was at his door.
His eyes met his, “Heimdall, hello. I fear you know why I’m here.”
His gaze trailed to the Bifrost. “Why?” was all he said.
“I need to see Thor.”
He paused, “Lord… I cannot send you where Thor is.”
He glared, taking a deep breath, “Why not? My husband is dead. I need to see my brother-in-law.”
“I sympathize, but Thor has given me orders-” The violent look in his eyes almost made him pause, but he continued, “- to not let anyone from Asgard to Earth. He says it's for your protection.”
“For my protection? To hell with my protection! Do you think I care what happens to me at this point? If you don’t let me through, Heimdall, I will not forgive you.”
“Lord-”
“Don’t. You should know why this is important to me. Was this order of Thor’s given before or after Loki’s death?”
Heimdall sighed, “Before.”
“Then I think the situation has advanced, don’t you think?”
After a moment of hesitation, he nodded, gesturing for him to follow.
The landing wasn’t as smooth as he imagined it being. His body was flung into the ground, hard enough to cause an indention in the asphalt he laid upon. He groaned, hoisting himself to his feet. He glanced around, remembering the instructions Heimdall had given him.
“You’ll be dropped off in a place called New Mexico. You need to get to a place called New York.”
“Why are they all called New? Were the previous ones destroyed?”
“No, they just have stupid names. Anyway, you should be able to find a vehicle to drive you. Just look on the black road and wave to a yellow car. Then tell the driver to take you to New York. Offer him this.” He handed him a handful of paper. “It's the currency in this section of Earth. The distance will be far, but you’ll get there before it is morning.”
His eyes scanned the road, looking for one of the yellow cars Heimdall had told him about. One caught his eye and he waited for it to come closer before raising his hand. Like Heimdall had explained, the car pulled to the side of the road and allowed him to get in.
“Woah, how’d you get stuck way out here?” The man driving asked, looking around. “You piss someone off?”
Without answering, he said, “Can you take me to New York?”
He gave a whistle, “Depends how much money you got, dude. It would probably be, I don’t know, around three thousand dollars?”
“Is this enough?” He handed him the stack of paper he had received.
He flipped through it with a startled expression. “Uh-huh. Where’d you get this cash? This is about five thousand dollars in cash.”
“My currency is different.” Is all he replied. The man shrugged.
“Alright, I can take you. Any specific location I should know?” He began to type on his little black box in the front of the car.
“Stark Towers.”
The drive itself, without including any stopping for gas or for the driver to go to the restroom (his insistence that he didn’t have to go brought questions, but the driver just settled for a shrug and vague threat that he would pay for new cushions if he ruined them), lasted nearly twenty-eight (28) hours. Eventually, the driver pulled beside the curb in front of the infamous Stark Towers. After being paid, he wished him luck and drove off.
His outfit was definitely out of place, as the driver had mentioned many times, but he couldn't care less. However, the guards stationed inside the building thought this was an issue.
“Hold it.” One said, walking over. “What’s with the garb?”
“Garb?” He questioned.
“The get-up? The outfit? Why are you wearing that?”
He glanced at his fancy suit, “Whatever do you mean? Is this not customary? It's normal in my realm.” The guard’s eyes narrowed at the word.
“Realm? Where are you from?”
“Asgard.”
He sighed out, nodding to the elevators, “You’re here to see Stark? Go ahead. I don’t even care anymore.” His hand slapped his face and Y/N nodded in thanks before entering the elevator. “Wait, do you know how to use an elevator? Probably not, right? Press this button, the doors will close and you’ll go up. When the doors open, step off. Got it? I think you got it.”
He followed his directions, wondering why he sounded so… done with everything. He shrugged it off, instead waiting for the doors to open. Once they did, he was immediately met with a sight.
In front of him was a man. He was decently handsome. He glanced over and coughed on the drink he had in his hands. “Woah, how’d you get up here? What are you wearing?”
“The people downstairs told me to come up here. I am from-”
“God, I need to fire those guards. This is the third time this month.” He grumbled. He stared at him, looking him up and down, “Right, okay, what do you want? I’m kinda in my own house, meaning I didn’t want to deal with this today.”
“I am Prince Y/N from Asgard, and I want to see Thor.”
The man blinked. “Asgard? Oh, shit, okay. Well, Prince, I’m Tony. Stark, that is.” He gave no indication that he cared. Tony nodded to himself, “Right, yeah, Thor, okay. JARVIS? Can you ask Thor to come down here?”
“Right away, sir.”
The voice made him jump slightly. “Relax, it's just my helper.” Tony downed the rest of his drink. “Right, so, I have a question. You’re a prince of Asgard?”
“That is correct.”
“Does that mean you’re married to Thor?”
Before he had a chance to correct the man, Thor himself walked in. “Yes, Man of Iron? What did you-” His eyes fell on his brother-in-law. “I cannot believe it! Y/N? Is it really you?”
Without warning, the huge man rushed over and grabbed him into a hug. He laughed, returning the favor. He stayed in his embrace for the moment before pulling away. “Thor, it is a pleasure to see you again. It’s been too long.”
His laugh was loud and echoing, “Too long, indeed, Prince!” He paused for a moment, perhaps remembering where he was. “However, I must ask, my lord, why are you here? How did you get here?”
“Heimdall allowed me to use the Bifrost.”
“What? I told him not to allow entry for you.”
Her eyes were near murderous as she glared, “You did what? Why did you think that was a good idea? You didn’t even bother to visit me when you sent me that stupid letter!”
Thor sighed, “My Lord, I am sorry. It was wrong of me not to check up on you. But you should not be here. It is very-”
“Hey, Stark!” Another man entered. His hair was brown, but it had touches of silver. “His royal annoyingness wants to see you.”
“Shhhhhhh.” Tony whispered, gesturing to the pair of Asguardians. “Thor and his husband are having an argument.”
“Will you stop calling me his husband? I am not his husband!” He hissed. His eyes narrowed. “Who are you?”
The new person raised his hands in mock defense, “Clint Barton.” Clint turned back to Tony, “He’s pretty persistent. Getting kinda feisty.”
“Well, Reindeer Games can wait a minute.”
At that comment, Thor looked nervous. The prince in front of him raised an eyebrow, “Who is ‘Reindeer Games’?”
“Oh, you probably-”
“-don’t know him!” Thor supplied, cutting off Tony. “He is not important.”
“Woah, big guy, never heard you say such things about him before.” Thor tried his best to inform Tony how bad this was about to get.
“Who are you talking about?” He just about demanded, his eyes glowering at the billionaire.
Thor stood in front of his friend, “Now, now, prince, you must be tired from the journey! How about we get you to sleep!”
“Thor. Get out of my way.”
“I’m afraid I can’t, my lord. This- This is to protect all of us.”
He scoffed, “Protect you? Who in the Nine Realms are you hiding from me, Thor? Why? I thought you were like a brother to me.”
“Like a brother? So, not a brother?” Tony muttered to Clint. The prince raised her hand to shut them up.
“Thor. Tell me who it is you’re hiding. Or I will find out for myself.”
Thor didn’t speak. He barely moved other than hiding his gaze in shame. With a much greater force than necessary, he pushed Thor from the way. He made no move to stop him, despite knowing the bad outcome.
“Stark. Barton. Who is this person?”
With a glance at Thor, Clint responded, “Uh, his name is Loki?” His glare fell and he looked almost sad.
He turned to his brother-in-law. “Is this some kind of trick? Did you really put them up to this? Or was the letter a sick joke?”
“It wasn’t meant to be a joke. It was supposed to keep you in Asgard-”
“So you told me my husband was dead?!” Tony gasped, whispering to Clint again. He turned and glared at them, forcing the pair to leave the room in a hurry. “I would never have expected this of you, Thor.” He was close to tears internally, but externally he would never let a tear fall. “Take me to him. Now.”
With a short nod, he gestured for him to join him on the elevator.
