AU where Zuko was born a Water Bender.

Call it the spirits fucking with Ozai, call it "technically the avatar is the master of all four elements and Zuko's a descendent of Roku".

Zuko was born a Water Bender. Zuko kept it secret from his father at the request of his mother.

Ursa went out of her way to hunt down a Water Bender to teach her son in secret, lying and saying that the Water Bender was just a nanny because Zuko required more work than Azula.

She got Kya, of the Southern Water Tribe.

Kya, who isn't actually a Water Bender.

Ozai knows his son is a bender, but he thinks he's being spited because Zuko refuses to Fire Bend near him. When he challenged Zuko to Agni Kai, he did it to "teach his son a lesson", but also to finally give Zuko an excuse to Fire Bend.

But Zuko didn't.

Zuko got burned and banished, and Kya went with him and Iroh.

Okay, but hear me out; Zuko adoption fic, Bumi adopted him.

Freshly banished and high off his gourd, 13 year old Zuko stumbles onto the wrong ship when his uncle stops to resupply, manages to wriggle into an exotic pet of some sorts cage, and falls asleep.

Enter King Bumi, opening his cage for his newest pet and finding it curled around a kid.

Does he know this is the Fire Prince? Yes.

Does he know where said kids uncle currently was? Also yes.

So what was Bumi gonna do?

Adopt the kid, obviously.

"King Bumi, that child just firebe-"

"I know! Can you imagine, an AIRBENDER in MY line?"

"What no that was fi-"

Followed by cackling from Bumi.

Zuko keeps trying to escape, he really does, but Bumi keeps trying to escape with him and thats not the goal-

Idk, I think it'd just be fun for the whole "someones going to die." "Of fun!" Dynamic.

Bumps favorite past time being pretending to be incompetent at war councils and letting Zuko just go off, cuz that kid has a set of lungs on him and does not know when to shut the hell up, and also its good to work through trauma by screaming at it.

Avatar AU where when Zuko got blasted by his dad, he got sent reallllly close to the spirit world. Monk Gyatso, hanging around because he wants to see Aang, comes across a boy almost entering the spirit world permanently and consoles him, and decides to stick around. Now Zuko is still banished, but he's got Iroh when he's awake and Gyatso when he's asleep to undo the brainwashing his dad did to him, and it changes a few things.

One of them being that his fire bending style starts to utilize air bending moves, which is very confusing for Aang when they first meet.
