Chapter 1 - A glimpse of youâŚ
-Jake!
-Good Morning!
-How are you doing?
-I know what youâd sayđ⌠Oshi. You seem excited.
-Of course! Guess where Iâm going today!
-Ta Da! Where everything began for us!
-DUSKWOOD!
-Todayâs the pine Glade Festival, you know! I canât believe itâs been a whole year already. It still feels like everything happened yesterdayâŚ
-Good thing Pine Glade falls on Saturday this year. I even took two days' leave just for this! EwâŚThat darn internship. I can only guess how horrible a permanent job would be⌠đŠ ArghâŚI donât want to graduate!
-Supposedly, these two days will be my only vacation while Iâm on probation. They literally work us to death you know! Ugh. No wonder you wanted to blow up the government đ¤
-Yeah. Yeah. I know. Now youâd say, ââŚThat was unnecessary.â
-I knowâŚI justâŚ
-I miss you, Jake. đ
-Really.
-You still remember me, do you? Is it still dangerous for you to reach me?
-Tell them to come! FBI or whatever! Iâll knock them down for you!
-Well, I guess thatâs it for now. Iâm going to arrive shortly.
-Right! Iâve got good news for you!
-Hannah will be joining us today! Weâre all going to have lots of fun tonight.
-Also, Iâm going on a date with Jessy đ¤
-Phil invited me to the Aurora today⌠he still gives me free drinks too. Haha.
-I can see you all annoyedâŚWellâŚI just canât say no to free food.
-Anyway, I hope everything is alright with you. Somehow everything ended well for everyone too.
-I can still remember that dayâŚa year ago. Hannahâs a lot better now, though she still goes for therapy. Lilly misses you a lot too. Richy is almost recovered too. Though the doctors say some of his burns would leave scars.
-Okay. Iâm at Duskwood now. Itâd be great to see you around you know⌠After all, when your gorgeous girlfriend walks around all alone, so many guys wish to keep her company. đ
-Iâm just awesome! đ
-Goodbye Jake. I love you. â¤ď¸ď¸

As soon as getting off the bus, Oshi hurried to the hospital to see her friend as she did for the past year whenever she visited Duskwood. After one year of painful treatment, Richy had finally managed almost to heal the severe burns on his arms and back.
As she was about to step in, a cheerful voice called, âOshi?!â
As Oshi turned around, her lips curved up. âJessy!â
After hugging each other for a while, they stepped in. âIâve really missed you, Oshi! Itâs been so long since you last visited us.â
âI know right? I wanted to come soon tooâŚWhat to do. The internship is killing me.â
âAwwâŚDo they make you work too hard?â
âToo hard wouldnât do any justice. Theyâre working us to death! I crawl home half-dead after work!â
The two stopped giggling as they arrived at the patient room. Oshi carefully knocked the door, âCome in.â
Richy, sitting by the window, smiled brightly at the two. âLong time no see, Oshi!â
âI know right? So sorry I couldnât come because the work was killing me.â
The afternoon arrived as the three chatted, occasionally laughing out loud.
âStill no news Oshi?â
Oshi looked at her hands at Richyâs question, the question almost all of her friends from Duskwood ask her every time they see each other. ââŚNothing yet.â
âMaybe he would put you in danger if he were to reach you. He was like that the other time also, right? When Lillyâs video was uploaded?â
When Jessy soothed her, she chuckled, trying to hide the bitter feelings, âHeâll come. Definitely. You know, the whole guy is weird.â

The two ladies went on a lunch date at the Black Swan before finding Cleo at the Gates of Hope. As Cleo claimed last year, she was swamped at the Pine Glade Festival. Not further disturbing her, Jessy and Oshi left to walk around. Hannah and Thomas were to come along with Lilly at six. Since Dan got the job at Aurora, to which Jessy had to beg Phil practically, Dan was rarely available after dusk.
Everything was peaceful in the strange yet beautiful town, Duskwood. As they shopped in the Market Place, time flew by. Thus the two ladies headed to the Rainbow Cafe, where the group agreed to meet.
But the joyous times were bound to fly away quickly. As Hannah was still a little unstable, Thomas took her home before the fireworks. Lilly also had promised to help out Cleo, thus leaving only Jessy and Oshi to see the fireworks. Cleo and Lily promised to join them later at the Aurora.
When they arrived at the Black-water lake, it was already crowded. âItâs your first time, right Oshi?â
She nodded excitedly, rubbing her hands together to warm them up a bit. Jessy added with sparkling eyes, âItâs really stunning! When the fireworks reflect on the lake, itâs so beautiful! Like you wonât be able to imagine ever! You have to see it yourself!â
Soon Jessy went off to buy coffee as the wind was cold, leaving Oshi alone at the lake. The time was nine fifty-nine, with one minute remaining for the fireworks show to start. Oshi started to look for Jessy. As she looked back in vain, she noticed a warm gaze as she turned another way. An eye she had never felt before yet felt so familiar. Oshi turned back around as quickly as she could.
The bright, colorful fireworks exploded throughout the night sky⌠The Black-water lake reflected them. It was as if they were floating in the skyâŚ
A pair of deep blue eyes met her dark brown eyesâŚ
It was as if only the two of them existed in the entire universeâŚ
As if the whole world finally let them have some spaceâŚ
As if two broken souls were unitedâŚ
Everything felt completedâŚ
Everything seemed to be alright.
There was absolutely no way she would not recognize this gaze. Even if the tall figure in front of her wearing a black hoodie was a total stranger, that warm gaze welled up in her eyes. Her lips could only tremble, letting no word out. Her entire body seemed numb, unable to lift a finger. Oshi just stood stillâŚstaring at the sapphire eyes.
Even though a distance of a few meters remained between them, they had never felt this close beforeâŚ
A hand slightly shook her from the behind, to which she turned back, surprised. Jessy was staring at her, concerned, âOshi? Did something happen? I called you many times.â She handed a warm cup of coffee to Oshi as she continued, âYou didnât seem to hear me. Are you alright?â
As soon as Jessyâs words ended, Oshi turned back to no avail.
âWas that my imagination?â
But it felt so real. So real that it couldnât have been a mere hallucination. With a flustered heart, Oshi headed to the Aurora with Jessy.

-Jake!
-Tht wsnât you?
-I ws prety sure thoughâŚ
-Wy wonât ya cme?
-JakeâŚwhn wil yo
âOshi! Youâre drunk!â
Jessyâs eyes were watery as she looked at her miserable friend. She raised her head tipsily to look at Jessy. With blushed cheeks and hazy eyes, she looked prettier than usual. Jessy hurriedly put a coat on her, supporting Oshi to get on her feet, âStop texting him alreadyâŚOshiâŚIt breaks my heart to see you like this.â
Of course, the result was Oshi welling up in tears as well. This course flow wasnât even out of the ordinary for Phil by now. It happened almost every time Oshi got drunk. As he watched his little sister and her detective friend all drunk and teary, Phil gulped down a glass of water. It was past midnight, yet the two ladies didnât seem to want to go home yet.
âWhy wonât he come already? UghâŚâ Oshi stood up, her feet unbalanced. âIâll just beat those bastards! Let them come! F-â Jessy hurriedly covered her drunk friendâs mouth so that she would not openly curse the investigation bureau.
Phil chuckled softly as he kept watching her, Oshi, the infamous girl who accidentally got tangled in Duskwood. At first, it was just for fun; she was a fun and easy-going person. He was just in his habit and flirted with her. Albeit now that he had known her for a little over a year, she was a much greater woman. Thus, Phil had a good impression of her. Oshi also seemed to get along with his little sister genuinely.
Though Phil was often annoyed at them, he didnât dislike Jessyâs group of friends. The problem was that he was the one who had to sort out most of the trouble they made. Cleo and Lily left long ago, Hannah and Thomas didnât come at all, Dan was busy working, and Richy was in the hospital. Frankly, it left a bitter aftertaste when everything ended last year almost breaking apart the group.
Maybe thanks to this girl, the group was still hanging together, albeit by a thin thread.
âDan! Jack Daniels, Youâve finally grown up! Heh he! Though flower shop suits you much better-â
âOshi! Donât! Donât say it! Dan would kill me!â
He avoided drinking alcohol purposely so that he could take the girls home. Phil stood in front of them, and Oshi, who finally noticed him, looked straight into his eyes with half-closed eyes. Her big eyes were red and swollen due to crying and weeping.
Oshi stood unsteadily, pointing the index finger at him. âPhil! Where have you been?!â
âIâm so sorry, Phil! Oshi is drunk!â Jessy kept apologizing as she tried to shut Oshi down. She was worried that Phil might get angry at her again. Phil and Jessy just started to get along fine in the past year, thanks to Oshi.
âPhil! You have to be good to Jessy! Thatâs not how a big brother should be!â Phil chuckled as he nodded while Oshi steadied herself and sharpened her big eyes. âAnd you! Stop using those emojis!â
His heart held a kind of bittersweet feeling as he listened. Even after an entire year, Oshi was still holding onto a man whose face she didnât know at the very least. A mysterious hacker who suddenly appeared in her life and then suddenly disappearedâŚ
Though Phil most certainly believed that his feelings for her were a mere infatuation, it still bothered him at times. Especially when she cried out like this, Oshi, always a happy-go-lucky cheerful lady, was weeping like a child because of that man. Who was he to make her like this? Was he such a great man? Was âJakeâ even his real name?
Alas, he finally managed to get the two ladies in his car. Oshi kept sobbing, Jessy silently soothing her throughout the way back. Then she would suddenly sober up and apologize for making a scene. Strangely, Phil was happy that Oshi seemed to be herself while she was with them.
As usual, Oshi was sober when they arrived at Jessyâs and apologized. âI donât even know where to beginâŚIâm so sorry, Phil. I might have disturbed your business too. You even had to drive us home.â Her lips slightly protruded as she sulked. A soft smile came to his face as he thought how cute she looked.
As Phil was on his way, he noticed a man walking on the road towards Jessyâs. As many strangers visited Duskwood for the Pine Glade festival every year, he did not think much of it.

Chapter 5 - Consoling youâŚ
This was the first time Jake looked shy from the first moment he met her physically. Until now, she genuinely believed that him being shy while texting was simply because he couldnât know the other party's reactions.
âWhat is it, Jake?â
âUm. SoâŚI was wondering ifâŚyou would like to stay with me tonight.â
The words passed through her akin to an electric shock, numbing her body to the tips of her hair.
Seeing her blank face, he hurriedly added, âOf course, I would take you right away if you wish to go home. No need to feel pressured.â
A few seconds later, gaining her senses back, she hurriedly answered, trying her best to ignore her thumping heart. âN-No. I will.â Flustered, she unconsciously ran a hand through the mid-length dark hair, turning it messy. âI mean, I would. Iâd come with you.â
Jakeâs deep blue eyes lightened up, his lips twitching, though all he did was nod silently, taking her hand in his.
âAh. Wait. I have to call Jessy first. She must be worried since I suddenly left.â
âAlright. I will call a cab in the meantime.â
***
âDan, did you talk to Oshi? About the strange guy, I mean?â
Dan and Phil were finally ready to close the bar after a long day. It was almost dawn by the time they finished cleaning and everything else.
âYeah. She told me that was a guy she knows.â
âA guy she knows? Then why would he secretly stare at her like a creepy stalker?â
Dan answered, rubbing his sleepy eyes, fighting his best not to fall asleep while standing, âWell, I can only think of one guy whoâd creepily stalk her around.â
Phil looked back, pausing whatever he was doing, âWho?â
âWho else but the hacker boy.â Dan shrugged before heading to the front door nonchalantly.
âSo the hacker is finally backâŚ.â
Phil and Dan left the bar as they finally closed the doors. The two took taxis; otherwise, they would probably get into an accident sleep-driving. The Pine Glade's festive atmosphere was gradually dying as the morning arrived.
To think that he was in jail just a year ago. He had even hired the same guy who testified on him because of a misunderstanding. Everything still felt surreal.
There were a few things he realized from all that by the end. He shouldâve looked after Jessy more. Moreover, he saw how much she cared for him. Above all, non of the things he was taking on her were Jessy's faults. Her fatherâs faults had nothing to do with Jessy. He was far too wrong for Jessy, who always looked up to him with love and respect. Oshi made him realize this.
Maybe that was why Oshi always acquired a corner of his heart for the past year.
Though now it seems that the time to let go has finally come.
***
Throughout the way back to the hotel he was staying at, Oshi was glued to him, only looking at him. As if he was the only thing she could see.
His heart broke to see her like this. The Oshi Jake knew was an intelligent, strong-willed woman who was braver than anyone else. But the woman beside him, hugging his arm for life, looked anxious and weak. So nervous that her world would break apart. Losing her will to fight back.
She trembled as he cupped her warm cheeks in his hands. He wished they were not too cold for her. She closed her eyes as he slowly closed the distance between their lips, giving her plenty of time to refuse. When his chapped lips touched her tender ones, her eyelashes fluttered.
He deepened the kiss as she rested her hands on his neck, letting her invade his soul as she pleased. He wouldnât have protested at the moment even if she wanted to destroy him.
It seemed her heart was not entirely convinced that he would stay with her for real this time. She still feared that he would suddenly disappear. Jake knew that words couldnât secure her anymore. He would have to stick to her, always being there for her so she would be fully convinced that heâs not going to leave again. Only his actions could heal her anxious heart. Not to say it would take some time.
And he was willing to do everything within his power to make her happy.
As she was dozing off after staring at him for a long time, he leaned her head toward him. Jake recalled when his beloved woman said that she would not care even if it was him who kidnapped Hannah. Right now, his feelings were the same.
He would take down the world if he had to.
To make sure she would be safe and sound.
Before everything went down for him, Jake had several women in his life. But non of them were like this girl. He had never felt such intense love and yearning for someone in his entire life. She was stronger than anyone, braver than anyone, selfless than anyone.
Kinder than anyone.
Loved him more than anyone.
Giving up on a few of his stubborn morals was nothing if it meant he could stay with her forever.
If he could be loved by this great womanâŚ
None of the other things mattered.
He wanted her to know how precious, beautiful, and pure her kind soul is.
He would do anything for her to let her know how much he loved her.
At this point, he was certain.
He loved her moreâŚ
And his love for her would only grow as the time passed.
âI love you, Oshi. I really do.â
