“Do I look like Ashton Kutcher?” Jaime asked, since the whole race topic had already been eluded too once, and because he hoped it would ease the tension. Things probably couldn’t get more worse, so maybe a little joke would help. Jaime forced out a small laugh, smile but a ghost tugging at his lips, hope still a small little flame in his chest. He’d dropped everything to come here for this man. If he needed to wait a bit for the surprise to wear off, that was fine, as long as Aiden would eventually get his shit together enough to realize that this was a good thing.

It was, right? Jaime’s brow furrowed in confusion. Did his mom lie? Did Aiden remember Priscilla? Their age difference wasn’t huge, and Jaime was pretty sure he’d remember having a brother, even if he was small… too many things weren’t adding up. Now it was Jameson who stared at Aiden with a baffled expression, and it grew more when his brother dropped down to sit on the cold pavement of the porch.

Following suit, because he honestly didn’t know what else to do, Jaime dropped down to the ground as well, pulling his knees together and resting his chin on top of them, arms wrapped around his shins. “Yeah, not one bit,” Jaime agreed to the statement about Priscilla. “She told me you were adopted. I didn’t… I didn’t even know either until awhile ago, I guess I’ve had time to adjust, but… it’s cool, right? I thought, maybe,” Jaime faltered. He’d come here to have a brother. Wasn’t that obvious? This was so foreign, this sense of uncertainty. It reminded him of the way he felt when Brook died. Just gone, leaving him with no plan and a pile of wasted dreams. Jaime hugged his legs tighter. “I just wanted to meet you.”

“No, no you don’t,” Aiden just stared at the other, not even sure how he would be able to string the words together. His half-brother looking like Ashton Kutcher was honestly the furthest thing from his mind. Jaime kept mentioning a she as if Aiden would suddenly know who this person Jaime was referring to.

Of course, Aiden had known he was adopted. He knew the whole story after an incident with a foster parent. Everything had come out into the open, the story of him being abandoned, being founded by his adoptive parents, getting adopted, and everything that fell in between those storylines.

“H - How would she know that I’m adopted?” Aiden was trying to piece everything together, but he just couldn’t figure it out. From what he knew, she had left him in a field, probably left him for dead to be honest. “Whoever she is - ,” Aiden spat out, “she left me in a field, she didn’t even care whether they found me dead or alive. It isn’t cool, Jameson. You got to stay. You don’t know what it feels like, what your mother did to me. Sure, genetics say that we share the same parent, but this woman means nothing to me. You don’t even know what I’ve been through.”

“I was perfectly happy in my life. I had my dream job, I met my dream girl, my best friend came back in town, I finally had a family again. Yeah, of course, you wanted to meet me because you didn’t have to experience what it was like to lose your parents at the same time when you were my child. My parents died in a car crash when I was a child. I grew up as an only child, and only person in this cold, harsh world. Maybe if your mother hadn’t left me in a field, maybe things would be different, maybe I would’ve been cool with having a brother. But when you grow up alone, you don’t know what it’s like to want a sibling because all you can do it fight for yourself. I had to make a life for myself when the two people who saved my life left. Your mother didn’t care about me. She’s clearly lying. Maybe she needs to get her facts straight because even my case worker never knew who left me in that field. Your mother ruined my life, my chance to have a happy ending.”

Aiden wasn’t the type of person who would just open up about his family or what he’s been through, but he figured this person needed to know. He wanted nothing to do with Jameson in this moment. This just turned his world upside down.

LOCATION: Dirty Dan’s food truck STATUS: Open @wilmingtonstarters

This place came highly recommended by the one person in Micah’s life that knew food better than anyone else. Despite her very tight budget, she figured she was entitled to an afternoon out and some delicious ribs. Ribs which she was no eating very messily. She’d given up on the napkins three bites ago and was now fully embracing the sauce all over her face look. In between two bites, she noticed the person sitting in front of her staring with a look she couldn’t fully decipher. “What? Don’t even pretend like you’ve figured out how to eat ribs while keeping your face and hands clean,” she said with slight grin. “Isn’t this kind of part of the fun?”

Ribs on a weekend afternoon sounded like the best idea in Aiden’s book. He could be found burying his face in a book or burying his face in food. Though Aiden grew up in a city where ribs weren’t the top food group, he learned that it was different living in Wilmington. His go to was the food truck. Though the lines got long, he found that an audiobook would help pass the time. Aiden glanced at the other across him and tried his best to hide the reaction on his face, but he couldn’t help it. “Um - it’s not that. There’s just a bee that’s coming our way and I don’t want to freak you out and I think you should stand very still.”

It took Abby a few moments to connect the dots of the situation. Aiden wasn’t there to see her, why would he be when she didn’t even tell him she was going to be here today. “Old…old college friends,” she repeated, glancing between the two of them. Immediately, her hand flew to her mouth, eyes wide. Oh fuck. She had never put the two and two together. And why would she? Even when she told Aiden about her previous relationship history (if her thing with Gray could even be called a relationship), it’s not like she told Aiden Gray’s name. It’s not like she knew that they were old friends. It’s not like Gray knew she was seeing Aiden, it’s not like she knew Aiden and Gray were friends. She shook her head, backing up as she put her hand down. “That’s…really great. Uhm…I’m just gonna go…crawl out of a bathroom window.” She took off down the hallway, knowing that in fact there was no window in the bathroom but figured it would be a good place to hide anyway. She opened the door, shutting it behind her and locking it as she took a few, shuddering breaths. This was fine. Totally fine that her current something and her ex something were really good friends. Maybe they’ve talked about her. Whatever. It was totally fine. @grayfischer

Grayson remained quiet, mostly, during the exchange between Aiden and Abby. He’d seen her pale, scurrying off, leaving him feeling beyond uncomfortable and looking at Aiden with bewilderment. As Abby disappeared down the hall, Gray cursed mentally — she certainly didn’t make things look any better. He couldn’t help but remember how Aiden had talked about her, and…. the last thing he ever wanted to do was get in the way of this. Not for them.

Besides, it wasn’t really his place to tell Aiden what has happened, right? That was Abby’s news. He didn’t have to say anything, although, Aiden’s totally confused expression right then made Gray wonder if he’d connected the dots already. It was unlikely. Aiden knew how weird Grayson was about sex, right? “Abby is a newer friend. We met last year, ‘cause of the whole nerds unite thing,” Grayson offered up in explanation, being truthful. They’d been just friends for 99% of their time knowing each other. Just that one confusing moment before he left… which had been nothing, probably. “I didn’t tell her when I left, either, so I think she’s still upset with me. I didn’t know she was your girl, but you know, I totally see it now. It’s, like, a perfect match.”

Aiden watched as Abby ran to the bathroom. Of course, everything in him wanted to chase after her. He was curious as to why she reacted the way she did. It shouldn’t have been so weird that the three of them had known about each other. He didn’t question it. Aiden kept his eye towards the hallway just in case he saw Abby peeping out again. He let out a deep sigh, wondering if he had done something to mess up this whole thing with Abby or something.

“Oh, that’s probably why I never knew the two of you knew each other. I mean you and I were already drifted apart by then. I met her one time when I went in to speak to an old professor but we only started becoming friends when we sat together at a coffee shop and things kind of progressed from there.” He sighed, hearing that Abby was also abandoned by Gray. His heart felt for her. “Is she - is she the girl that you did the thingy with and then just left?” Aiden recalled an old conversation that the two shared. “We’re dating. I haven’t asked her to be my girlfriend yet. Thanks though. I think she complements me really well.” @abbyrchrds

Status: closed for @aidenjcarter Location: Aiden’s house  Time & Date: January 2nd, early evening

After fielding a dozen of calls from Priscilla after first rolling into town a few days before Christmas, Jameson had promised not to approach his half-brother until after the holidays. He didn’t know why the fuck it matter, but after a little bit of thinking, her idea made sense. This was quite a bombshell to drop on someone. Hell, he’d barely wrapped his head around it at all, but the moment the holidays ended - finally - Jaime was checking the file from the PI to look up his address again.

In the car before heading up to the house, Jaime looked at the high school graduation photo attached with the file. He didn’t… look like someone Jaime would’ve ever known. Before putting more thought towards it, Jaime hopped out of his beat up Chevy and marched up to the door, knocking rapidly. He pushed back his long, dark waves and waited.

“Hi!” Jaime greeted with an unsure smile. He very rarely felt out of place, but this? This was surreal. “You’re - Holy shit. You’re actually Aiden. That’s fucking awesome, man. I’m Jaime.”

Aiden was surprised he recovered so quickly from his annual New Year hangover. Maybe he was finally making smarter decisions by keeping himself hydrated throughout the night. The past year had been looking up for Aiden, he met someone that really complemented him, he got his best friend back, and on top of that, he made more friends. He finally felt like he had a family after so many years.

Gathering up the rest of his students’ papers, Aiden opened up his laptop and began entering his grades. Aiden usually had headphones on to keep away all the outside noise. He needed to get the grades entered before he got yelled at by his superior. Through all the noise canceling technology, which seemed to have failed Aiden this one time, Aiden heard a slight faint of what he recognized as a knock on his apartment door.

Aiden wasn’t expecting anyone and the last person who surprised him like this was Emmy. He would’ve been happy to see her and so with a smile on his face, he opened the door, only to be met by someone who wasn’t his friend. “Uh - yes, I’m Aiden,” he quickly replied, kind of creeped out by the other standing outside his front door. Aiden quickly walked outside and closed his door. “Are you some guy trying to sell me a magazine or something?” completely ignoring that the other hand introduced himself.

To imply that Rey isn’t a beacon of endless beauty and wisdom is, frankly, blasphemous. Winnie looks mortally offended, turning away from the snowmen to address such a blatant lie. He’d curse Aiden out by name if he could remember it. “You’re wrong. It’s Rey’s world, we’re just living in it.” His argument would perhaps be taken more seriously if he wasn’t a) still draped in neon tinsel, and b) didn’t have the singing snowmen providing a backing track for it. “I’m not getting rid of Luna. Luna isn’t going anywhere – other than in your bed when I come over.” When Aiden asks if there’s anything else to be added to the room, Winnie steps back to look at his work, as though he’s Michelangelo appraising the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. “Nah, I think this is enough.” There’s a contemplative pause. “Right! We’re doing Emmy’s room next.” He clearly has a death wish.

“Okay, we’ll go with that since you seem to believe it,” Aiden went along. Aiden wasn’t going to question why Winnie thought of Rey in such a high regard. In a way, Rey has been like a mother to Aiden, always leaving a plate of food for when he came over after work, and just making sure that he was taken care of. Aiden was taken aback when Winnie stated that Luna was gonna end up on Aiden’s bed. “Woah - first off, you don’t know where I live, and two, I don’t think that my dogs will be very pleased with your rodent on my bed. Luna might not make it out of my house alive if you bring her over. My dogs are quite possessive. They’re small but mighty,” he laughed. His dogs really were possessive. He recalled the first time that one of his friends came over and his dogs went crazy when he got up to give his friend a bro hug. Aiden let out a deep sigh, unsure if it was a good idea to now decorate another room, but he would just say that Winnie threatened him into doing it or something, like that was even remotely believable. “Are you really trying to have your life be ended by two people now?”

where: pravda night club who: open to all @wilmingtonstarters

“Fifty-two-hundred fucking dollars!” the male excitedly yelled over the loud music that was cascading throughout the nightclub, slapping a thick envelope containing cold-hard-cash down on the counter before the bartender. He’d just won a large sum of money from a high-stakes poker game going on down the block, and figured: what better way to spend it than on copious amounts of booze? Of course, the smarter, more responsible thing for him to do would be to put it towards his debt…but why would he when Pravda was right there, waiting for him on a busy night? All the signs pointed there. “Anyone who wants somethin’, gets something — hey, you!” Adam pointed at the person nearest to him, beckoning them over. “Whatever you want, on me. We’re celebrating tonight.”

Nightclubs and Aiden weren’t exactly the perfect combination. He found himself here after being dragged out by his friends. He had some people approach him, asking if he would buy them a drink. He politely declined, just wanting to spend some time with his friends. He heard some commotion and turned to see what was going on. He walked towards the other, assuming that Aiden was the one being spoken to. Feeling more adventurous than usual, Aiden replied, “How about two rounds of shots?” Shots weren’t exactly what Aiden usually went for, but he figured it wasn’t his money and the guy offered, so why not? “You sure about this, man? I could at least introduce myself as a thank you. I’m Aiden,” he extended his hand.
