Container Measurements

Okay so I'm putting all the measurements for how much wax my jars/mold can hold here. I have so many pieces of paper that have calculations on them scattered all over the place. And some of them are wrong! Because I would occasionally forget to zero out the container before weighing the water!!! So anyway, here is a list of measurements/calculations so hopefully i won't have to do this again...for these containers anyway.

>>Amber Jars from Jar Store (I probably won't get these anymore because the jar and lids together are kinda expensive. Found some slightly cheaper ones elsewhere).

8% F.O. = 13.7g , 60% Coco Apricot Creme = 103.2g, 40% Pillar of Bliss = 68.8g

I didn't have a free jar to redo the calculations but these are correct based on the...seven? candles I made already.

>>Uline Jars (I won't be using these jars anymore due to not agreeing with the owners of the company. but thankfully I found 2-3 other suppliers that have the same type of jar!)

Jar weight = 298g, water weight = 378g, Full wax = 325g Half wax = 208g

325 divided by (106%) = 306 wax 325 - 306 = 19g F.O.

172 divided by (106%) = 162g wax 172 - 162 = 10g wax

172 divided by (108%) = 159g wax 172 - 159 = 13g F.O.

325 divided by (108%) = 300g wax 325 - 300 = 25g F.O.

>>Salsa Jar from Jar Store (I probably won't buy more of this type mainly due to not liking the style. It's more tall and skinny rather than short and squat).

Jar weight = 258g. water weight = 380g, Full wax = 327g Half wax = 178g

327 divided by (106%) = 308g wax 327 - 308 = 19g F.O.

178 divided by (106%) = 167g wax 178 - 167 = 11 g F.O.

327 divided by (108%) = 302g wax 327 - 302 = 25g F.O.

178 divided by (108%) = 164g wax 178 - 164 = 14g F.O.

>>16oz jar from Fillmore

Jar weight = 288g, water weight = 382g, Full wax = 328g, Half wax = 160g

328 divided by (106%) = 309g wax 328 - 309 = 19g F.O.

160 divided by (106%) = 151g wax 160 - 151 = 9g F.O.

328 divided by (108%) = 303g wax 328 - 303 =25g F.O.

160 divided by (108%) = 148g wax 160 - 148 = 12g F.O.

>>Scoopable Jars from amazon (I didn't redo/re-check my calculation because the formula for scoopable are a bit different since they contain F.O., oils, and wax. From what I've seen the ratio between wax and oil is around 50-50. So i'm just gonna put the formal that doesn't account for the extra oil).

water weight = 196g

169 divided by (106%) = 159g wax 169 - 159 = 10g F.O.

169 divided by (108%) = 156g wax 169 - 156 = 13g F.O

I'll make another post for my silicone molds, since a lot of those molds are thin, they only need like 1g of F.O. Which makes going through the effort to calculate them seem pointless. But I suppose it wouldn't be if I had multiple of each mold, but I don't even though I probably really should.

Just Some Measurements...Quantities...?

1 ounce = 28.35 grams

1 pound = 453.592 grams

1 pound = 16 ounces

After making a few candles and wax melts I could this information to be helpful when ordering supplies. Since Fragrance oils are often sold in ounces and waxes being sold in pounds. Knowing how much wax and FO goes into your candles can help you know...well...how much to buy. Like if 1 pound of wax and 28g of FO can make you 7 wax melts. Then you know buying 11 pounds of wax and a 16-ounce bottle of FO can make you 77 wax melts with about 5 ounces of FO left over!

Wax and F.O. Measurement Formula

I got this from Armatage Candle Company and Memory Box Candle Co who helped clarify it. It works for me as long as I remember to take out the container weight when I do my math.

1)Take note of the container's weight. (This is just good to have especially if you forget to zero out the scale).

2) Place the container on the scale and zero it out.

3) Add water and record the weight. (Fill the container based on how much wax you would want in said container).

4) Multiply the water weight by 0.86g. This will give you the weight of the wax. (We'll also be working in grams throughout this). At this point if you aren't adding any fragrance oil then you can use this number to make your candle/embeds/waxmelts.

For adding Fragrance Oil

5) Net weight divided by ((100%) + (FO%)) = the wax weight needed. The net weight is the wax weight we calculated in step 4. The FO% is the percentage of Fragrance Oil you want to add to your candle. Typically candles and waxmelts have an FO% of either 6%, 8%, 10%, or 12%.

The smaller the percentage just means there is less fragrance oil to burn. This doesn't mean that scent will be weaker just that it doesn't last as long. Think of it like putting gas in your car. Putting a small amount of gas in your car doesn't make it go slower, just means you won't be able to drive as far/long as you would on a full tank of gas.

With that in mind, don't add too much fragrance oils to your candle. You run the risk of it not being fully incorporated into the wax causing leaking or oil pockets. So like salad dressing that's been sitting for a while, the excess fragrance oil will separate from the wax. And consider F.O. is very flammable if someone light their candle and there is F.O. sitting on top of the candle or an oil pocket beneath the surface, it could cause the flame to get outta control when the fire touches the oil. Which is not good. So anyways,

6) Net weight divided by (106%) = the wax weight needed. (For this we are just using an FO% of 6%).

7) Once you have the wax weight needed you can calculate the FO weight needed. Which is the Net weight - wax weight needed = FO weight needed.

Example!

We have a 12oz candle with a water weight of 395g. And we want to make a full candle with a fragrance load of 8%.

water weight: 395g FO%: 8%

395g * 0.86 = 339.7g Let's round up to 340g!

Net weight: 340g FO %: 8%

340g divided by ((100%) + (8%)) = wax weight needed

340g divided by (108%) = wax weight needed

314.81g Lets round up -> 315g = wax weight needed

Now for the F.O.

Net weight - Wax weight needed = FO weight needed

340g - 315g = 25g

25g = FO weight needed.

So, you need 315g of wax and 25g of fragrance oil to make one, 12oz candle.

I'm drowning in candle notes more so than actual candles! So, I'm going to post some important stuff/important reminders here. So, I can clear out some of my notes and make some space. Also, hopefully it'll make it easier to find stuff and not be as confusing.

Sadness

So a while ago I found the absolute cutest Sans crochet plush on this site! It was from an old blog that only had like 2 maybe 5 post...I think. But their Sans plush was exactly how I imagined it in my mind. And you know. I don’t download the pic. I don’t screenshot the post. I DON’T REBLOG THE POST! I do ABSOLUTELY nothing that to help me find that post again. Because of course I do. Because of course.

Okay I think I figured it out. I'm gonna do some markets first and not worry about doing an online store just yet. I think that'll help me with figuring out inventory and not have to worry about building an audience.

I'm not good with social media or actively reaching out to people. I socialize best when I meet random people and we just click. Which is why I like tumblr! It's the least pressured social media platform where I can just use it as a journal with only maybe 5 random people seeing it :)

A great place to document the things I want to do and the things I'll actually do. So my phone and laptop won't be cluttered with random stuff lol

It is interesting to go look back and realize how old these pictures are.

Been working on finding a candle recipe that works for me for since like 2020.

Starting to stress a little as the gravity of just how under prepared I am to be starting a small business. But I'm trying to push through! Since if I gave into every negative "you can't do it" thought...I wouldn't be doing anything...

So anyway, let's figure things out

A mother's day card I made a few years ago. I actually forgot about that lol. Back when I was kinda getting into paper crafts. I remember being a bit self-conscious about this after giving it to her. Felt like a child give their parent a handmade gift rather than an adult giving a better quality handmade gift.

This is a public announcement.

If you have to poo please do not squat over the toilet. And yes I am talking about a regular Western SITTING toilet. I shouldn't be seeing you're poop on the toilet tank or back wall!

I ironically got into candle making by watching Royalty Soap on youtube (before she started making candles lol). So for some reason watching her make decorative soaps made me think I can do that with candles! Which is partially true. So these are just some pics from my first candle kit

Starting A New

Just gonna use this as a journal/thought collector. Also probably a good place to dump my random project pics so they can stop cluttering up my phone lol.
