“Because I’m your boyfriend and girlfriends tell boyfriends things.” His smile was cheeky as fuck as he beamed at you across the pool.

You set your coffee mug on the side table and sat up straighter, leaning forward so your elbows rested on your bare knees. “Oh, do they now?”

You dragged the cloth down the groove, your fingernail pressed deep along the frame’s edge. You stared at the stock image of an orchard set in an eerie black and white. Would these frames one day be set with images of you? Of the child James hoped for? The house was cookie cutter; trimmed from the pages of any homemaking magazine; DIY feng shui or whatever nonsense they sold.

Your flats brushed over the area rug rolled out along the center of the hallway. Your name sounded from the next room. You lowered the cloth and crept to the doorway. James sat in the middle of the room, just next to the bunk beds, parts laid out all around him as he screwed a drawer together. The former dresser was disposed of.

Unlocking the apartment door and easing yourself in with arms full of groceries, you revealed bouquets and bouquets of flowers exquisitely scenting the small space and Lance, shirtless and jeans loose around his hips, accentuating that beautiful Venus belt and hideous tattoo.

“Let’s swap,” he suggested, welcoming you at the door with a gentle kiss. Oh, you’d missed those soft lips, a bit miffed he’d ended it after with single peck after such a long time away. He handed you a glass of champagne as he took the bags from you and moving them to the kitchen while you oversaw the gorgeous blooms. Roses, all in various pastel shades. Light, nothing bold. Romantic, stunning. Very unlike Lance Tucker.

A little overwhelmed, you were hesitant to move in case Lance was about to something really fucking stupid – your limbs were paralysed in fear. “You’re back!” you found your voice, purposefully ignoring the situation you had just walked into.

“I’m home, baby,” he confirmed. “It is not a mirage, your Gold medal-winning head coach man is stateside,” he whispered, proudly.

“I almost didn’t see you in between all the flowers…” you gave him a pointed look.

“You don’t like them?” he asked, a little saddened, chewing his lip nervously.

Being stuck in a hospital bed only agitates you further and you constantly find yourself apologizing to Parker for snapping at him – at least he’s understanding. He takes your anger with stride and doesn’t look at you with pity, his dark eyes only full of warmth and kindness. Peter doesn’t let you see his anger, unlike Sam and Bucky, who don’t try and hide their hatred for Drysdale.

Even if you missed Geralt so much that it almost hurt your heart.

You could feel the sunlight on your skin, warming your bones, warming the whole room as it spilled through the window and you just kept your eyes on the yard, on the people.

Maybe this distance was just as much as you were supposed to get.

Someone knocked on the door and opened it, but you didn’t even turn your head, you just stood still, with your knees pulled up to your chest, your parchment resting on them.

“Where’s Cassie?” Fin sounded almost confused and you shrugged.

“I gave her the day off.”

“And the guards?”

“I let them go.”

“You can’t be serious,” he said and came to pull himself a chair, “You can’t be alone, there has to be someone with you.”

“I could call them back,” you mumbled and turned to him, “Is that what you want me to do, my king?”

“You know it’s not like that,” he muttered, “I could never boss you around, you terrify me.”

You averted your eyes, pinching your lips and he cleared his throat,

“Trust me sister, your ability to kill people has nothing to do with just how intimidated I am by you.”

You heaved a sigh, then tapped your pencil on the parchment.

“I know you don’t like this,” Fin said, “I remember the last time the city was confined, as well as you do. But I had no other choice, we need to catch these people before another member of our family gets hurt.”

“They will be safe-“

“I’m talking about you specifically.”

You scoffed, then shook your head, “I doubt anyone could kill me.”

“Let’s make sure they can’t,” he eyed you, “I’m worried about you.”

You rolled your eyes, “Fin, I promise you I won’t get killed. Happy?”

“Not that!” he said, “This…whole thing. This isn’t like you. You haven’t been outside for two days.”

“Yes, mindless chatter and cruel gossips, oh how I missed outside.” You mumbled, “People were already scared of me, now they’re terrified.”
