My country is burning.

I can’t exactly figure out the best way to raise money so I’ll do my best to raise awareness.

Bushfires are nothing new to Australians, we have bushfire season and it’s common for it to happen in summer due to crazy high temperatures and winds but we’re not even in summer and we’re in a catastrophic fire season right now.

Since last Friday over 4 lives, 250 homes, 480 outbuildings and 18 facilities have been lost to the fires and over 1 million hectares have been lost in NSW and Queensland. An estimated 350 koalas have died in the fires. 

For the first time since I can remember, my home in the inner city was under a catastrophic fire warning and we’re in a total fire ban. At one point there was over 80 fires burning in my state alone. As of right now there’s 59, 13 which are uncontained.

People have lost lives, houses, livestock, everything.

The video above is a fire burning yesterday in Northern NSW. That is the magnitude we’re dealing with. 

So, I’m making this post in the hopes of raising awareness, and how people can help if they wish to.

NSW Rural Fire Service - supporting the men and women fighting on the front lines of the fires. 

The Australian Red Cross - aiding victims of the bushfires 

St Vincent de Paul Society - aiding those effected

“Holy shit?!” You lean forward in your chair and squint at your computer screen. Your eyes read the words over and over and yet your brain can’t process them beyond the superficial. You lean back in your chair again.

“Holy shit.” Pulling the glasses from your nose you blink, looking around the lab. It was nearly midnight, you were always the last person home and the first person up in the morning, the Campus Tech Lab basically had become your home the past thirteen or so years. With no one to share your surprise with, ‘not that you could share it anyway’ you think, you close your laptop staring into space for twenty seconds exactly before opening it again.

Yup. Still there.

“Holy shit.”

You shut your computer again, your heart pounding in your chest.

What was happening?!

Was this some joke? Some ‘I’ve caught you out now quit it.’ From Stark from beyond the grave? Carefully, you pull your laptop lid open again and close all the documents. The moment you do, they add themselves automatically to a new file on your desktop titled ‘Midnight Snack’. You swallow, before flicking your eyes back to the original email.
