Backstory: First generation American who grew up in the suburbs with her mom and dad, basically lived at the family mechanics shop until one day, when she was 10, Nic learned that her parents had been killed. Afterwards she was taken in by a human family that did not accept paragon. Nic was able to keep her race a secret since she hadn't turned 18 yet, but she lived in fear for years...

Spirit education

I will make a general post on spirits soon-ish, but strangely, spirit education comes up more in my story so far than the spirits themselves, so here’s a post on that.

Spirits can transcend the natural borders - the borders between beings, which they use to form bonds and sometimes to read minds, the borders between real and imaginary (can be used to grant wishes or bring about nightmares), some other borders of such types. To learn to do that, they have to study for quite a while.

A spirit is considered an adult after studying for 128 years. The process is called “the understanding of the world” and is divided into four segments. 

The first segment, from birth to four years, is the understanding of day and night, evening and morning - how does the energy flow within nature and animals, how does the sun, the moon, the stars influence it, why the division between times of day important. After that, the spirit also understands what kind of spirit they are - a morning spirit, a day spirit, an evening spirit, or a night spirit. That defines when they’re the strongest. 

The second segment, four to sixteen years, is the understanding of spring and summer, autumn and winter. After that, the spirit can communicate with the primal energy better and also understands which one they belong to,

The third segment, sixteen to sixty-four - the understanding of the elements - air, water, fire, earth. Again, level-up, understanding which one they belong to. It requires meditating in each element for twelve years. And when I say “meditating in” I really mean it. Stay in that volcano for twelve years or your understanding of fire isn’t considered complete.

The fourth segment, sixty-four to a hundred and twenty-six - the understanding of the energies of life and death, creation and destruction. With that, they understand the nature of all the primal forces of the world and know all the spirit tricks, and, of course, understand which one they are connected to.

Shimmi passed the first two stages - he “understands” the times of day and seasons and knows he’s a spirit of day and spring. That lets him become completely unnoticeable or very conspicuous by will in any setting and lighting, see in the dark and not be blinded by bright light, feel comfortable in any natural temperature/climate. However, continuing his spirit education would most likely destroy his human body, so he took a break to figure out if he’s okay with that.

Remember how I’ve been babbling about this chapter that I’m very excited about and want to post here once I finish it? I finished it, so here it is!

T/W: nothing serious, but there is a hunt scene where an animal is killed, and it’s briefly described. And repeated mentions of alcohol concumption.

Note: Again, not a native English speaker. If you think something sounds strange, please, tell me! This is the first draft, so there’s a chance some details might change, but the hardly anything serious. Also this is about 1,900 words - not very long, but you might want to find a comfortable place and maybe get some tea.

Like many people I've seen so far, the main one is just stagnant (I've made the mistake (?) of sharing it with people and there's been mild/teasing pressure to finish it)

However, I have a plethora of side stuff, with AUs and fluffy and angsty short stories that I delight in writing (that I'm starting to share here) especially those that I write with @pagesofcursive and her incredible characters.

There's also a plan just sitting in the back of my mind for another story for when my attention span eventually fails. It involves royalty, spying, heritage and cute family dynamics. And no one important is straight (naturally)
