I saw a post with a lot of notes and it pissed me off so I’m making a better one
Cis women should be allowed to wear packers if they want to and they’re still women. Cis men should be allowed to wear breast forms if they want and they’re still men. This would absolutely increase the safety and mainstream acceptability of pre- or no-op trans people and also cis people should be able to play with gender without it making them trans. Not everyone falls on the gender binary, and nonbinary people should be able to do whatever they want forever without being shoved into the boxes of “transfem egg” or “transmasc egg” especially not by other trans people
Let’s support EVERYONE’S ability to play with gender without telling them that being feminine makes them a woman inherently, I thought we were past that gender essentialism but it’s coming back and y’all need to stop it. It’s not quirky, it’s not fun, it’s reactionary and hurting real life trans people. Clothes are clothes, secondary sex characteristics are secondary sex characteristics, the gender and sex binaries are made up and nothing is inherent. Have fun forever and stop putting people in boxes
We’ll never break free of gender roles and stereotypes if even the queer community is taking them as inherent to human nature. Femininity doesn’t mean “good” and masculinity doesn’t mean “bad” or “predatory” and if you think that you should get that radfem brainrot taken care of, trust me it makes life a lot better
The thing that abled people who advocate for the disabled community don’t get is that there are times when disabilities/accommodations clash. Horribly.
Like I spent years having to come up with a solution to get therapy dogs into a series of residence halls. Why years? Because we had to decide who got to stay and who got to leave: the people who needed therapy dogs or the people with severe allergies to animals. Who got the alternative housing?
Things like fidget toys might seem great for some disabled people but having them in the room could be distracting/overstimulating for others. The same goes with stimming. It can’t be helped but neither can the anxiety that another person in the room feels as they watch/hear it. Additionally, something like a weighted blanket might immediately calm one kid down and send the other one into a panic attack due to the claustrophobia it causes. (*Points to myself*)
Every Metro bus in New York City has a series of seats at the front that can be lifted up to accommodate people in wheelchairs but if I’m in one of those spots then someone with a cane/walker has to journey even further to sit down.
The flashing lights of a fire alarm are there to help deaf/hearing impaired but if they’re not properly timed, they can also cause a person to have a seizure.
The worst part about all of these is that there is rarely a concrete solution that makes everyone happy/safe. And I’m not here to offer any because I don’t know them. I’m just here to remind you all that as you’re taking your education/health classes, as you’re reading your textbooks, as you’re preparing to go be an advocate, just remember that there is rarely ever such a thing as a one-size-fits-all solution to advocacy and that something you do that can help one disabled person might actually hinder another.
Food for thought.
not cluttering up the reblogs on that one post but people on tumblr/twitter are so fucking weird about post covid syndrome.
namely there seems to be an assumption that if you get long covid, it's because you are an able bodied person who just "wasn't careful enough" and "went back to normal" and "hates disabled people." lots of posts celebrating that the assumed able bodied long covid patient "knows what it's. like now" and "woman who voted for the leopards eating people's faces party now has the leopards eating her face"
i shouldn't have to tell people that i was already immunocompromised or that i caught covid from a family member who went to a party. i shouldn't have to have my own behavior interrogated for like. times i took off my mask to take a sip of water, or times i hugged a friend. for people to determine whether i deserved multisystem inflammatory syndrome, to suffer lifelong multisystem organ and nerve damage, to lose the ability to walk unaided, to lose the career i'd spent years training for, to be 27 and have no idea what my future is going to look like or even how long of a future i have given everything. and you know what? even if a person who believed the CDC when they said that covid was over experienced this? they'd still deserve access to medical care and disability supports.
why is there so much Percy Jackson in my For You page? Is there a new TV show or something?
