In case future generations want to know what lockdown in London was like:

I'm in the massive Sainsburys in Whitechapel. It's bigger than the village I grew up in. I reach the front of the queue for the self-service tills and the cheery staff woman goes 'Card?'. I do have my card but I'm wanting to use cash and I have a voucher. The standard practise here is to turn to the person behind you and go 'Card?' and let them go in front.

I turn round. Six feet behind me, entirely Covid-compliant, is a 6'6" tall thin man in jeans, t-shirt and an authentic-looking black leather plague doctor's mask. He looks down and down to both short me and even-shorter staff woman. The world narrows to the point of his beak. The blacked-out eyes show nothing.

I go, '...card?'. He nods and a gives a somewhat-muffled 'Cheers!'. I step aside. The Sainsburys woman points him down the rank of machines. We all carry on with our socially-distanced lives.

I hadn't.

I was ( I am) hunted by this monsters: I Can't, eventhough I try. that's what I'm feeling right now.

How am I supposed to pass, how am I supposed to survive now or tomorrow.

HOW CAN I GO THROUGH THEM AND WIN?

Not that anyone’s gonna really see this, but my night at work truly gave me some things to say.

I work at a small store in my hometown. I’m home from college for a couple months, and I need money for textbooks and tuition. I applied to 8 jobs and got accepted at 1. I’ve been there a week now, and it’s not too bad for holiday retail.

Being from a red state, I know a lot of people disagree with the mask mandates and safety protocols in place. It’s upsetting to hear about in the news, but tonight I REALLY experienced it firsthand. And I gotta say... it’s kind of terrifying.

I had a woman come in my store tonight with her son. Neither of them wore masks, and they walked in covering their mouths with their coat sleeves. As soon as they walked in and saw the store sign reminding people to wear masks and provide distance, they took their hands away and started yelling about how they were turned away from a local pizza place for not wearing masks. The pizza place turned them away for trying to use their coat sleeves.

My store doesn’t do that. I understand that some people have conditions that make mask wearing difficult. I can respect those people and their needs. Life, unfortunately, can’t grind to a halt. The world keeps turning, the days go by, and people have needs.

These people, however, were perfectly healthy. They yelled across the store at me (standing at the front register) about how being asked to wear a mask violated them. All while in order to keep my job, I have to wear one for 7-8 hours at a time, working and assisting customers. It might not be too hard of a job, but I’ll admit the mask can get uncomfortable at times.

I still wear it, though, because I have family that could die if I expose them to the virus. I need the job, but it’s scary knowing that if any small thing goes wrong, if one of those anti-mask people is carrying Covid... I could kill someone.

Let me repeat that real quick, so you understand the gravity I feel right now.

If any small thing goes wrong in my measures to protect myself, I could kill someone.

I live with my elderly parents while I’m home from school. They both have conditions that very likely would cause severe complications from the virus. Having people waltz in without a care in the world for the lives they could unknowingly be risking... it’s haunting. These people were so hell-bent on ignoring the mask mandate for their “personal liberty” that they forgot the person checking them out has a family. My coworkers and managers have families. The other customers have families and friends.

People in retail already get enough crap during the holidays. It’s stressful for everyone trying to prepare for their respective holiday gatherings, but in the midst of a pandemic... tensions are high. Work gets exhausting and I’m running around all the time doing what I can for people. If I even get an asymptotic case, I risk not being able to go back to school. I risk my employment. I risk the lives of my family, friends, and self.

If you’re seeing this... please. Please wear a mask. Please follow the mandates and guidelines. Please, please, please... remember your humanity. Remember that everyone you meet has people they are around. Family. Friends. Loved ones and strangers alike. By refusing a mask, even if you think it’s not going to hurt anyone, you could be risking the lives of dozens of people. PLEASE think about that.

And ask yourself this for me: is 20 minutes of discomfort in a store really worth risking that many lives? Are you willing to take that burden?

it's practically taboo to still talk about covid but god i wish we could acknowledge the worldwide trauma it's clearly still causing in people. like, it's flat out just. not "polite" to talk about how a mass deadly event might, JUST MIGHT, emotionally affect us a little bit. how an airborne invisible-to-the-eye thing can just BE anywhere now. how abandoned we still feel by our respective governments. how we've lost family, friends, either to death or misinformation and cults, which they cling to because they're ALSO afraid but often refuse to admit it because it'd mean admitting covid is real and ongoing. we just. can't talk about it i guess.

A Roundup Of COVID Tweets That Are On My Mind Today. Its Never Too Late To Be Considerate Of Your Health

a roundup of COVID tweets that are on my mind today. it’s never too late to be considerate of your health and the health of others around you. it’s never too late to decide to mask again after realizing our institutions have been set up to fail us if we get sick or disabled and that proper treatments are luxuries only the wealthy have access to.

I don’t know if the bookstore or Wil required them, but I am still absurdly happy to see a crowd in October 2022 where everyone is wearing masks. Yay for sensible, considerate people! The Daily Show with Trevor Noah is the only other place I see all-masked crowds these days.

wait its that bad in india????

as of 22nd April 2021 we have about 16.3M total cases and a death toll of 187K . Only about 1.4% of the population has been fully vaccinated yet.

on top of that, we've been facing a major shortage in oxygen supply (to the point where the govt has decided to airlift oxygen from other nations), a shortage in hospital beds and services. The numbers keep rising and with the spread of the new strain, the scenario has transformed into something deadlier than ever.

our infrastructures are falling apart and we need all the help possible at this very moment so the nation can be atleast saved when there's still a chance. I've already lost two of my friends, a teacher and family to the second wave and I can only imagine how much worse it can get. so i would like to take this opportunity to link in some donation posts below–

So, India is dying.

Look, I know a good number of you are from the US and things aren't amazing there either, but my country is literally on the brink of collapse. So I'd love it if we could talk about that for a minute.

If you can't do anything else, please just read and reblog.

A second COVID wave has taken out the healthcare system. There are no more hospital beds. There's an oxygen shortage. There's a critical vaccine shortage. The Central Government has thrown its hands up and is passing the baton to the State Governments to do what they can.

There are over 16 million covid cases. A record 330,000 new cases reported yesterday - comparable to the US at its peak. 187,000 dead as of today.

There is no plan.

Mass cremations are taking place. The cremation grounds are running day and night and they are short on wood. People are watching their loved ones die while waiting for a hospital bed, and then they're unable to give them the proper burial rights.

So, India Is Dying.

Hospitals are overwhelmed. Patients are being confined, two to a bed. They're the lucky ones.

So, India Is Dying.

We are on the verge of people dying in the streets.

This is the second-most populous country in the world. The largest democracy. A country that encapsulates over 15,000 years of recorded human history and has endured everything from famine to invasion to colonisation.

We might be at the end. This might be the thing that does us in.

People are dying.

So, India Is Dying.

People are dying.

So, India Is Dying.

People are dying and there is no plan.

So, India Is Dying.

More good news? Variants are popping up. A double mutation strain has shown up. It is resistant to current vaccines. This will not go away. This is the devastation they warned of when the anti-maskers were out protesting the minor inconvenience of covering their face in public.

My country is on the verge of an emergency state. Our government has failed us. This is as dire a situation as it ever could be.

Look. I don't do much with my life. I write fics, some of you have read them and that's pretty much it. I spend my days with my head in the clouds because that's where I like to be.

But two days ago, my grandmother tested positive, had to be taken to hospital and the ambulance caught fire.

She barely made it to the urgent care she needs.

So, here I am, using whatever meager platform I have to cobble this request together. Because I have to do something.

If you can, donate.

Or spread the word.

Help. Please.

Hey fun fact, if you suffer from a high fever (~102) after getting your covid vaccine, invest in a cool water bath and a nap.

My moral line in the sand is not a dramatic one, I think. It is thin and a little scuffed around the edges, subtle unless you kick at it. But it doesn’t waver when you do.

Years ago, I read an article about the modern audacity of caring, about extending the basic consideration of doing no harm. It’s strange how these lacking negativities cycle back like orbits--or is it that they never left in the first place? Another anti-mask protest gathered by the park today. I close the blinds and wonder if the air will clear before the next one.

I know I’m no pinnacle of morality. I’m a hypocrite with an edge of broken glass, and I don’t know how to forgive. And maybe that’s the core of it, really. My roommate snaps at me for being judgmental and I point the shards at her. I don’t lower my arm when it starts aching. I don’t pull open the blinds the next morning.

At sunset, someone I admire sits six feet away with a steaming mug between her sweater-paws. When her eyes sparkle, it’s only a reflection of the streetlamp. “Is it so wrong,” she asks me, “that I don’t think I can uphold such support to the people who continue to go to parties during all of this?”

I think about unconditional positive regard. Then I shake my head.

Later, I wonder if our lines in the sand are parallel.

Just for a Little While

Just for a Little While

I was born in 1995, and I have spent my 25th year of existence during the onset of the 2020 pandemic. I have heard of the quarter-life crisis before, but I never did expect that I would be experiencing it while the world is in literal viral chaos. I have been in isolation before, but this imposed an unrelenting imposition of both internal and external turmoil. This, in turn, has given me an…
