This certainly wasn’t how you had expected to spend winter break. What you had expected was more along the lines of scattered notebooks, textbooks that weighted a ton and sitting in front of your laptop for hours on end. That was light-years away from where you were now, getting off the plane in Finland.

The bone-biting cold made you clutch your backpack’s strap with one hand and your boyfriend’s hand with the other. You had expected the cold, after all you were in Finland, but its intensity had still managed to take you by surprise. You had always wanted to visit the Northern European countries but you hadn’t imagined it would happen like this. With Hoseok, you should have known to expect anything.

Violent flames paint the horizon, ashy plumes of smoke rising up into the darkened sky. Soot rains down from the heavens, turning the snow black beneath your feet, and every breath you take fills your lungs with burning, putrid air. Everywhere you look, you see smoke. Your hands shake and your eyes sting, unbidden tears spilling forth to wet your cheeks. Off in the distance, you hear people screaming, their voices laced with desperation and anguish.

Since the beginning, humankind had feared the ocean and what lurked beneath its waves. Despite what anyone might say, this fear was not unfounded. For as long as anyone could remember, there was always knowledge of another species similar to mankind, swimming below the ocean’s surface. The merfolk. A whole civilization of these creatures ruled the sea, as man ruled the land. For centuries, the two kingdoms were neutral to one another. Sticking to their corners of the world, never daring to challenge the harmony their ancestors established. 

However, when humans wanted to expand their connections, to build vast ships to sail across the ocean, the world grew tense. Unsure of how this new mode of transportation would affect the relationship between the two worlds. Many feared the worst rallied against these grand ships, wishing the king would stick to trade via land. But the king refused to see reason, and that was his doom. 

The first ship sent across the sea was a cargo ship, The Spring Moon, filled with spices and jewels beyond compare. Her maiden voyage was to sail to the land across the sea, establishing a new trade route between two human kingdoms. Only her route sailed straight through a reef where a colony of merfolk had made their home. The captain realized this too late and the colony was destroyed. Several of the merfolk lost their lives, including the Sea King’s only daughter. 

The humans would excuse that it was a mistake, an unfortunate accident. Yet with the death of a royal on their hands, the Sea King declared war on the humans. The once beautiful blue ocean grew red with blood as the merfolk slaughtered any human that was discovered on their waters. Regardless if they were a member of the king’s army, a simple fisherman, or a child swimming in the shallows. 

Tucked away in a landlocked castle, you grew up. Never seeing the ocean or the world beyond the castle grounds while the war waged on the shores of your country. That was until your grandfather, the king, had passed away in his sleep, leaving your father to continue his war. It was clear after his coronation, he had devised a plan. One that wouldn’t become clear to you for quite some time.
