all i gotta say is, jonathan sims is so fucking cunty i love him. he really doesn't give a single shit. he is such an ass. every episode ends like "yeah we couldn't confirm these claims. i sent martin to do some work to see if he'd finally die, unfortunately he's still breathing. my job sucks ass, gertrude really was just an old bitch who can't sort for shit tbh. why is everyone out to get me. fml. end recording"

might add onto this when i’m not literally at work but the extent of martins guilt in mag186 is insane to me. never ONCE as a listener have i considered him at fault for jane’s attack on the institute and yet, years later, here martin is still convinced he’s guilty for it?? insane. martin im so sorry it’s not your fault honey i promise

The thing about Melanie is that she is far too cruel to Jon. Morally, she is in the wrong. Jon is not to blame.
But. BUT!!! Crucially. She acted irrationally in an irrational situation. She's literally trapped at the institute, a woman whose worst fear is being powerless, who lashes out the moment she feels that power slipping just to gain some modicum of it back. And now she is trapped and powerless and Elias holds all of the power.
She tries to go after Elias, but he has the upper hand literally no matter what. She can't gain any kind of power from him. So she goes to Jon, who is so tired and lonely and confused that she knows she can hurt him, and she does, and it isn't defensible but it also makes perfect sense. Same as Tim being ruthlessly cruel to Jon in season 3. Same as Basira accepting Daisy's hunting but not Jon's feeding in season 4. Same as Jon himself and all the shitty decisions he's made.
To perceive of Melanie as the villain in those situations is to refuse to understand her situation. Melanie is a victim in a shitty situation. Her forgiving Jon and apologizing for the violent way she acted towards him is a huge step in her character arc. She willingly sacrifices a certain level of power (her sight) and relies on Georgie's help just to gain the personal identity that comes with quitting the institute.
Do you get it? Do you get it? She's been made to feel small her whole life. She's not a bad person, she's trapped and coping the only way she knows how
i still have sooooo many thoughts about the fact that the web is literally the parent/guardian/protective entity something about it makes me so insane. like the hill top road stuff is super egregious you kind of can’t get more obvious than a web avatar running a halfway house but it’s the stuff like mr spider eating jon’s adult bully instead of jon himself or the table protecting people from the not-them being of the web or that girl who hero worshipped neil lagorio and took care of him when he got sick or that site annabelle got set up where you could have the web kill people if they did something horrible to you. i feel crazy
