what was jon and basira's game plan for even if the surgery went off without a hitch and melanie slept through it? I feel like even with the Murder Bullet removed, an extremely rational response to waking up in your bed and finding your leg bandaged up from a surgery you don't remember is to become murderous in a very mundane, home grown way.

while I can see vague jonmartin double characters being relevant at some point in the future, I would also be totally satisfied if this is the most we ever hear of them. it's nothing concrete, it might not be them at all, the beginning of the case didn't even take place in the main protocol universe, but still. it's a little nod to the idea that there may be somewhere where they meet like normal, in a situation where they would probably have cause to see each other for a few minutes every week. to me that is the perfect balance of open endedness with a gesture towards the possibility of a happy ending.
