Some tips for using a few words to describe voices:

1. Tone Words: Use tone words to convey the emotional quality of a voice. For example, you can describe a voice as "melodic," "soothing," "sharp," "gentle," or "commanding" to give readers a sense of the tone.

2. Pitch and Range: Mention the pitch and range of the voice. Is it "deep," "high-pitched," "raspy," or "full-bodied"? This can provide insight into the character's age, gender, or emotional state.

3. Accent and Diction: Describe the character's accent or diction briefly to give a sense of their background or cultural influences. For instance, "British-accented," "Southern drawl," or "formal."

4. Volume: Mention the volume of the voice, whether it's "whispering," "booming," "murmuring," or "hushed."

5. Quality: Use terms like "velvet," "silken," "gravelly," "honeyed," or "crisp" to convey the texture or quality of the voice.

6. Rate of Speech: Describe how fast or slow the character speaks, using words like "rapid," "slurred," "measured," or "rambling."

7. Mood or Emotion: Indicate the mood or emotion carried by the voice. For example, a "quivering" voice may convey fear or anxiety, while a "warm" voice may express comfort and reassurance.

8. Resonance: Describe the resonance of the voice, such as "echoing," "nasal," "booming," or "tinny."

9. Timbre: Mention the timbre of the voice, using words like "rich," "thin," "clear," or "smoky."

10. Cadence: Highlight the rhythm or cadence of speech with descriptors like "staccato," "lilting," "rhythmic," or "halting."

11. Intonation: Convey the character's intonation by saying their voice is "sarcastic," "apologetic," "confident," or "questioning."

12. Vocal Characteristics: If applicable, mention unique vocal characteristics, like a "lisp," "stutter," "drawl," or "accented 'r'."

In light of Duolingo laying off its translators, here are my favourite language apps (primarily for Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, and te reo Māori).

Multiple Languages

Anki is a flashcard programme and app that's not exclusively for languages. While making your own decks is ideal, you can also download shared decks for most languages.

If you're learning Japanese, specifically, Seth Clydesdale has websites for practicing alongside Genki's 2nd or 3rd editions, and he also provides his own shared Anki decks for Genki.

And if you're learning te reo Māori, specifically, here's a guide on how to make your own deck.

TOFU Learn is an app for learning vocabulary that's very similar to Anki. However, it has particularly excellent shared decks for East Asian languages. I've used it extensively for practicing 汉字. Additionally, if you're learning te reo Māori, there's a shared deck of vocabulary from Māori Made Easy!

Mandarin Chinese

Hello Chinese is a fantastic app for people at the HSK 1-4 levels. While there's a paid version, the only thing paying unlocks is access to podcast lessons, which imo are not really necessary. Without paying you still have access to all the gamified lessons which are laid out much like Duolingo's lessons. However, unlike Duolingo, Hello Chinese actually teaches grammar directly, properly teaches 汉字, and includes native audio practice.

Japanese

Renshuu is a website and app for learning and practicing Japanese. The vast majority of its content is available for free. There's also a Discord community where you can practice alongside others.

Kanji Dojo is a free and open source app for learning and practicing the stroke order of kanji. You can learn progressively by JLPT level or by Japanese grades. There's also the option to learn and practice kana stroke order as well.

Duolingo Alternatives by Language

Disclaimer: I haven't used or tested all of them. All resources have different strengths, e.g. Drops being designed for vocabulary. They often aren't full alternatives for Duolingo or formal classes. I just wanted to compile resources for all languages on Duolingo to make the switch easier, especially for the less popular languages.

Feel free to also check out my collection of free textbooks

If you want a more detailed resource list for any of these languages (or perhaps one not listed here) you can send me an ask and I can see what I can do.

Duolingo Sucks, Now What?: A Guide

Now that the quality of Duolingo has fallen (even more) due to AI and people are more willing to make the jump here are just some alternative apps and what languages they have:

"I just want an identical experience to DL"

Busuu (Languages: Spanish, Japanese, French, English, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Korean)

"I want a good audio-based app"

Language Transfer (Languages: French, Swahili, Italian, Greek, German, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, English for Spanish Speakers)

"I want a good audio-based app and money's no object"

Pimsleur (Literally so many languages)

Glossika (Also a lot of languages, but minority languages are free)

*anecdote: I borrowed my brother's Japanese Pimsleur CD as a kid and I still remember how to say the weather is nice over a decade later. You can find the CDs at libraries and "other" places I'm sure.

"I have a pretty neat library card"

Mango (Languages: So many and the endangered/Indigenous courses are free even if you don't have a library that has a partnership with Mango)

Transparent Language: (Languages: THE MOST! Also the one that has the widest variety of African languages! Perhaps the most diverse in ESL and learning a foreign language not in English)

"I want SRS flashcards and have an android"

AnkiDroid: (Theoretically all languages, pre-made decks can be found easily)

"I want SRS flashcards and I have an iphone"

AnkiApp: It's almost as good as AnkiDroid and free compared to the official Anki app for iphone

"I don't mind ads and just want to learn Korean"

lingory

"I want an app made for Mandarin that's BETTER than DL and has multiple languages to learn Mandarin in"

ChineseSkill (You can use their older version of the course for free)

"I don't like any of these apps you mentioned already, give me one more"

Bunpo: (Languages: Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Korean, and Mandarin)

----- 𝚂𝙷𝙾𝚁𝚃 𝚂𝚃𝙾𝚁𝙸𝙴𝚂 𝚆𝚁𝙸𝚃𝚃𝙴𝙽 𝙱𝚈 𝙹𝙰𝙼𝙴𝚂:

so, sadly there is only one example of james' writing publicly available online. he had an oc! this original character was named ' brisco fletters '. this short story was written between 1904-1909. during this time, he was often in south america and you can tell that his work as a sailor and surroundings heavily influenced his work. it's important to note that, despite some sloppy grammar, he was extremely eloquent with his words. he would have been around 19-22 years old when this manuscript was written. it is also suggested that he was looking to publish his work, perhaps for an american women's magazine. this story is set in south america, probably chile or argentina as those were james' normal stomping grounds in his south america runs. the nature of this story features a phenomenon called 'crimping' or also known as, 'shanghai-ing'. james explains it best: "Most people have heard of the word "shanghai", and vaguely know that it means to catch poor sailormen and pop them aboard an outward-bound vessel very much against their own free will, and many tales have been told about these poor fellows being drugged and smuggled aboard by night"

Now if I had not had my ever alert suspicions [calmed] both by the gentle tones of her voice and innocent remarks, and the day being a calm sunny one I should have questioned her how they could proceed when men were so scarce. But we skimmed gently along and presently she pointed out a smart four masted schooner named the “George H Waback”, on approach which she stood up in her stern and waved a white handkerchief to the villainous looking rascal whom I took to be the mate. When we got alongside the accommodation latter and the surly ruffian had helped her up she called to me in a most bewitching way “Oh, Mr Fletters you must just come up and have a glass of wine and a morsel to eat as I’m sure you have missed your dinner time, besides I want Dad to pay you & thank you for rowing his “little treasure” safely back to him.”

No as I said before if there hadn’t been a beguiling little woman in the case and a clear fine sun shining pleasantly overhead as if there was no evil or underhand work going on in such a beautiful world I should have had my nerves sensing danger before now, especially when the “Dad” dropped from the same pretty lips which had just distinctly said he was not aboard. But with hardly any hesitation I made the boat’s painter fast and ran up the ladder to the deck.

in the next scene, it is clear that brisco fletters has been shanghaied and drugged. but this poor guy, well... he's kinda horny.

One evening some days later during my trick at the wheel, and while the officer of the watch was forrad about some work, I saw a small figure steal up from the cabin companion way, and soon recognised a winning little face which I had not seen since that eventful moment when I received my first meal in this ship from her hands, but which I had thought more about than would perhaps be considered reasonable by men who do not believe in “love at first sight”. She stole softly aft and was beside me when she whispered “That is you Briscoe is it not?”

I answered in the affirmative with a thrill to think that she knew my name. “I want to ask you for forgiveness for the cruel thing I did in Callao” she continued “and am now going to tell you enough to shew you that I have real reasons for wanting to get a crew. This is my first voyage with my father, and though I love the ship and sea very much, shall be glad to get home again, because I think the mate has some influence over my father, and also he wants to marry me, which” (with a fierce little stamp of her foot) “I will never do” she turned away evidently thinking she had said too much to a stranger, though had she known it that stranger was willing and anxious to be her best friend, so I softly called her back and told her I freely forgave her enticing me aboard, and was only to glad to be there now that she had come on deck and would perhaps come to speak to me again at the wheel.

welp, that's it!! it so cute to read. whether or not it was published is unknown.

Thomas Andrews Born7 February 1873 15 April 1912

Thomas Andrews Born 7 February 1873 – 15 April 1912

Thomas was the lead shipbuilder & designer for Harland & Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He oversaw all the plans & designs for the White Star Line’s Olympic class ships, and the most famous ship in history, the Titanic. Before she sailed, Andrews requested as many as 64 lifeboats on Titanic, but he was overruled and the ship was only fitted with 20. Andrews sailed on the maiden voyage of Titanic to oversee it, and was the first to know that she would sink. Andrews did not try to save himself. Instead, he did all he could to place passengers in lifeboats, knowing there were only enough for about half on board. He was last seen in the 1st class smoking room, admiring his ship, his life jacket on the chair next to him. His body was never recovered.

He was a true hero, a gentleman, and extremely handsome!

Thomas Andrews - Architect Of The Titanic And An Intelligent, Compassionate Manand A Stone Fox! He Apparently

Thomas Andrews - architect of the Titanic and an intelligent, compassionate man…and a stone fox! He apparently spent his last hours handing out life vests, helping people get onto lifeboats, and throwing furniture etc overboard as floatation devices for people in the water. Made famous by Victor Garber in the movie, I think the real man is much hotter!

The Handsome Irish Man In The Photograph WasThomas Andrews(7 February 1873 15 April 1912),the Shipbuilder

The handsome Irish man in the photograph was Thomas Andrews (7 February 1873 – 15 April 1912), the shipbuilder who designed the infamous RMS Titanic. I used to have such a huge crush on him - and I still would totally marry him in a heartbeat, hadn’t he been a married man (plus, dead) (married and dead, what a bad combination) (especially the “dead” part).

He knew every detail of his ship. His work was not finished once he and the ship set out from Southampton: after the voyage began, he continued to help the crew adjust to the new ship. He carried a notebook with him and was constantly making notes for improvements.

It is known that one night, in 1910, he took his wife Helen (who was carrying their daughter Elizabeth), to see the ship, while it was still in its cradle and the Halley’s comet was at its greatest brilliance - he certainly knew how to make a pregnant woman smile!

After Helen gave birth to the baby, he nicknamed his daughter, Elizabeth Law-Barbour Andrews, “Elba” after her initials - terse guy, wasn’t he.

He was travelling on board of the ship during its maiden voyage when it hit an iceberg: during the sinking he went from cabin to cabin, banging on the doors, yelling for women and children to get into the boats. He was last seen near the First Class Smoking Lounge, calmly, sadly waiting for the end, and when asked if he would make a try for a lifeboat place, he did not answer. Other accounts have him throwing deckchairs into the water, so that people could use them to stay afloat: whatever his last moments were, the phrase which echoed back was “heroic until death.”

During his long years of apprenticeship, study, and work at Harland  and Wolff, Andrews had become well liked in the company and amongst the shipyard’s employees: generosity and a fine sympathy were prominent traits in his character. On seeing some of his workers, he is reported to have said to his wife, “There go my pals, Nellie."  Any account of Andrews as a manager and a boss portray him as a fair, concerned man who cared about his workers. On one occasion Andrews had a chance to rescue one of his "pals.” Anthony Frost, had climbed 80 feet of scaffolding during a gale in order to secure some loose boards. While up there, Archie became terrified and Andrews climbed the scaffolding himself to help him down before securing the boards himself.

By his very actions, Thomas Andrews was shown to have cared about the people who rode his ships, even the crew (remarkable for the time). After their shift, the boiler crews would climb a long spiral staircase to where their quarters were. Andrews had furnished a drinking fountain at the top of the staircase, a small luxury but one very unusual for the time (considering the recipients). The handsome Irish man in the photograph was Thomas Andrews (7 February 1873 – 15 April 1912), the shipbuilder who designed the infamous RMS Titanic.

Hello Fish! Happy spooky October! May I request a gif set of all the Phantoms holding the veil after Christine left? If I remember correctly, there’s one where Erik touch the veil to his lips? Thank you!

There would be waaay too many gifs if I posted ALL of them, but here's a decent variety!

in any other story, merry would have died in battle or pippin in minas tirith, or frodo would have fallen or sam killed by gollum but tolkien, after facing losses in real life, said: no, this time they live. this time, they all get to live. in a way, the lord of the rings is a love letter to dead soldiers.
