In 2004 an anonymous fan made half hour reels of all the known intros to all known super robot and mecha anime that was known to exist. In 2010 they were copyright struck from YouTube.

All four reels are now back.

in the latest cyber-news: the internet archive has lost their case against 4 major publishing houses (verge article). they’re going to appeal, but this is still a bad outcome. the fate of the internet is currently hanging in the balance because 4 multibillionare publishing groups missed out on like $15 of combined revenue during the pandemic because of the archive’s online library service. it’s so fucking stupid.

for those who don’t know what the internet archive is, it’s a virtual library full of media. books, magazines, recordings, visuals, flash games, websites - a lot of these things either don’t exist anymore or cannot be found & bought. heard of the wayback machine? that’s part of the internet archive. it is the most important website to exist, and i don’t say that lightly. if the internet archive goes down, the cultural loss will be immeasurable.

so how can you help?

boycott the publishing companies involved in this. they’re absolute ghouls, frankly, and don’t deserve a penny. the companies involved are harpercollins (imprints), wiley (imprints), penguin random house llc (imprints), and hachette book group (imprints). make sure the websites are set to your location as it may differ worldwide.

learn to torrent. download a torrent client (i recommend transmission), a vpn (i recommend protonvpn - sign up and choose the area that’s closest to your continent/country), and hit up /r/piracy on reddit for websites. with torrenting, you can get (almost) any media you want for free in high quality, with add-ons such as subtitles, and with no risks of loss. i would also recommend getting into the habit of watching stuff online for free. the less you can pay to a giant corporation, the better.

get into the habit of downloading and archiving materials. find a TB external hard drive, ideally the higher the better. it’ll probably cost around $60 for 1TB and continue to go up, but they’re so so useful. if you can’t afford a drive, look for any GB harddrives or memory sticks you have lying around and just fill them up. videos, pdfs, magazines, songs, movies, games - anything you can rip and download and fit on there, do it, because nothing is permanent.

donate to the internet archive. this is the most important option on the list. the IA relies entirely on funding, and it’s going to need more to fight this case. whatever you can donate, do it. i promise it’s helpful.

and finally…

Years later, don't let this shit go unnoticed.

The internet archive is home to:
• many of Wikipedia's sources
• many otherwise-lost pieces of media
• THE ENTIRE WAYBACK MACHINE

The data loss if the Internet Archive went down would be comparable to the Library of Alexandria. https://t.co/oTEDFQdcdf

If you can, please donate to the Internet archive, links in the description. The loss of the archive would be devastating for dozens of reasons.

"But this characterization confuses IA’s practices with traditional library lending of print books. IA does not perform the traditional functions of a library; it prepares derivatives of Publishers’ Works and delivers those derivatives to its users in full. That Section 108 allows libraries to make a small number of copies for preservation and replacement purposes does not mean that IA can prepare and distribute derivative works en masse and assert that it is simply performing the traditional functions of a library." Hachette Book Group, Inc. v. Internet Archive, No. 23-1260, at 31 (2nd Cir. Sept. 4, 2024).

For those who live in the US (or are American citizens living oversees) and have any kind of physical or learning disability that impacts their ability to read standard text, the National Library Service provides free access to books and magazines in both Braille and audio formats. (Access is digital or they will mail you a physical format)

I know audio doesn't work for everyone and some really need the large print format but hopefully this info can help some people. Also check with your local (usually state level) branch of this service, they might have large print books also.

There is an application and you do need to have it signed off by a certifying authority who can confirm your disability but if you don't have a medical professional or social worker who can sign off you can get a librarian to do so.

This seems like a good time to remind folks: if you are upset at the decision re: the Internet Archive's "Open Library," but you don't have a direction to send that energy, maybe consider seeing what you can do to support and defend your local public and/or school library?

If you live in the U.S., there is a good chance that politicians and/or right-wing activists are threatening your local libraries. This may be through new state laws, or through actions by local officials, or even the library boards themselves. Or maybe they are enduring a wave of book challenges by some very enthusiastic and determined bigots.

It's worth checking out what is going on in your area, and if there are any existing groups and organizations working to fight back that you can join or support. (Or maybe even start something yourself!)

Your voice matters - Sign the open letter to publishers, asking them to restore access to the 500,000 books they’ve removed from our library ✍️ https://t.co/wnBnSDlm5i #LetReadersRead https://t.co/azamv08ErF

Let Readers Read: An Open Letter to the Publishers in Hachette v. Internet Archive:

Please sign this petition. Almost all of the 500k books that they removed are actually no longer in print and inaccessible to many.

The publishers did not care about those books in the first place but they did this anyway because they have vendetta against open access.

The Internet Archive was hit. Change your passwords!

Also if you're pro-Palestine like I am you will know that hitting the archive is a terrible idea. Its not owned by any government. Its a nonprofit that is for preservation of media. I am all for activism but this is not it.

The internet archive is under attack

1/3 As most of you know, we are currently facing a lawsuit brought by 4 corporate publishers who want to stop the Internet Archive from lending books. #EmpoweringLibraries

You can easily donate to the Internet Archive at https://t.co/zvVoZ6Rfun. Please do that if you have the money, and if you don't, at least spread the words.

Don't let greedy publishers and hack writers like Chuck Wendig erase over a quarter of a decade of internet resources.

The internet archive is so important it’s sooo important to archive digital data to preserve it if you can throw a couple of dollars their way to support them then please do so. Don’t let greedy people and individuals take away the internet archive!

people hate raw emotion. they treat it like looking at a dead animal.

insides creeping to the outside. protruding love, cabernet emotion spilling.

drink and drink. the intoxicating wine of the human condition.

heavy with so little, exasperated and fickle.

drunk with the hope of happiness, drowning in fear of sadness, all wasted pursuits.

investigate the corpse, wring out the mind.

suck the marrow dry.

I Dont Remember Why I Would Save The Link To This Picture - Finding It Years Later Whilst Cleaning Up

I don’t remember why I would save the link to this picture - finding it years later whilst cleaning up my PC. It’s from some sort of Internet Archive ... it’s from 1930 and it’s called “mma legs of nude hollywood” and I still thinks it’s beautiful ... well, maybe i should go into it some day ... but not today. I already did a lot of cleaning. I’ll go on from here tomorrow ...
