I remember so many damn comments from my mom.

-“Boys won’t like you unless you suck your stomach in.” I was in 4th grade when she said it. I took her advice and now, as a 21 year old adult, I can’t stop. It was a big contributor to my Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Holding my stomach in (basically enganging my abs?) is something that helps my dysmorphia now. I even do it when I am by myself. I do it in the shower, I do it when I work out, when I am walking around my house, eating, whatever. I am actually physically uncomfortable when I don’t suck it in.

-A common one: “You would look so much better if you wore makeup.”

-“You should cut your hair, you look like Cousin IT!” I like my hair very long, like halfway down my back long. It makes people focus on how long my hair is and not on how fat I am. (Which I KNOW is my illness talking but... still. Makes me feel better and I just love it long.)

-Other things were just general little pokes at my appearance. Criticizing the things I would like to wear and the like.

She made way worse personal comments to me. Like when I was 16 and told her I wanted to get a tattoo when I was over 18. She FREAKED out. Absolutely flipped. Told me that no man would ever love me because men don’t like tattoos. She, and I am not kidding, drew where I wanted the tattoo at the time on herself while at the office with her male coworkers, showed them, and asked if they would find a woman attractive if she had a tattoo like that. (Btw. It was THE tamest tattoo of all time. I wanted a cross on the inside of my finger.) She said all the guys answered that it was disgusting. She told me I would never be successful because of it. That I would live in a trailer park the rest of my life, blah blah blah. Jokes on her though. Not only did I get my tattoo (on my chest. Larger and more intricate. It’s still pretty tiny though. I like simple designs) but my boyfriend thinks tattoos are super hot and wishes I would get more.

Seriously parents, you have no idea how much those little comments can hurt your child. I promise you, they will alwayd remember them.

To my brothers and sisters in Christ, whose fathers have left them feeling unloved and abandoned, I pray that today you will remember how very much your Heavenly Father loves you. You have a Father who will fight for you, died for you, who never breaks His promises and promises to never leave you or forsake you. He knows your every sorrow; every tear you have cried, He holds in His hand. You are his highest treasure, his precious child, his beloved creation, and every galaxy has been writ in the sky to show just how much He adores you. I know it’s hard, but today is not a day of heartbreak, for you are a child of the King! :)
