The Homepage Was Looking Colorless, So I Decided To Fill Dayna's Request For A Hot Dog After All. This

The homepage was looking colorless, so I decided to fill Dayna's request for a hot dog after all. This is the first one I haven't done from a reference photo, so it's pretty bare bones. I think the mustard's kinda cute, though. :)

The very first entry! I was listening to a Radiolab podcast about Darwin when I sat down to sculpt, so today's post is a little bird. I modeled it after a sparrow, but it's not exactly a perfect replica.
I swear he didn't look so much like he was wearing headphones in person. I was going for a sort of textured stripe (the reference photo had a swath of different-colored fuzz in that area), but it doesn't really translate in these pictures.
He fit perfectly in the palm of my hand, too.

Here's how my thought process worked on those scary zombie eyes:
1. Let's put small circles on top of the larger circles so it looks like pupils!
2. Hmmm, there's not very much contrast. I'll come back to that.
3. Hey, this mouth looks great! Maybe I should hollow out the pupils instead of trying to build them up...
4. HOLY CRAP THAT'S FRIGHTENING.
5. (after taking pictures) Well, now he just kind of looks like he has goggles.
Lesson learned!

Usually, after I take a few pictures of the sculpture, I smoosh the little guy back into the scrap pile. But I was so enamored with my cute little Hypnotoad that I just couldn't. (I mean, I did, eventually...but I took a lot of pictures with him first. Possibly for my scrapbook. [Don't judge.])

When I helped her move, Dayna let me borrow her whole collection of Astonishing X-Men comics (thank you!), and now I'm kind of obsessed. I just finished #11, which has a pretty freaky reveal at the end involving a Sentinel. So here you go! His shoulders are too narrow (I carved off too much), but other than that I think it's a definite improvement over Zombie Scott Pilgrim.

I can't imagine where the inspiration came from for this one.
