yknow i think a good reason why i like tgcf so much too, is that tons of these romance stories have a love interest very much like hua cheng, but they always prove themselves to be controlling. they want to restrict who the main character can talk to, what the main character can do. they get mad at the main character over petty shit. the abuse doesn't even really get acknowledged as awful behavior.

hua cheng's anger is so rare that the one time he yells at xie lian it scares him because it's so unexpected. and it's only because he was scared he'd try to severely harm himself. he doesn't even get mad at xie lian for doing dangerous things, doing things hua cheng says he shouldn't do. he loves the part of xie lian that does stuff like risk his life to save the life of another - even if he never thinks the person deserves that graciousness. it's so cute.
