hence why sometimes i think about vegas and macau. young vegas and macau.

young vegas and macau, just after their mum died. and how from a very young age, vegas has always been extremely observant, perceptive and quick to pick up on details. young vegas that reads books and learns how to infer and deduce and read between the lines. that outwardly kept appearances in the shape of his father's smiles at his brother are deceptive when underneath the table he is clenching his fist until his knuckles are white and he knows what that means. and what that means for him and his mum when they get home. and then later on what they mean for him, when his mother is no more, when they get home.

i think about young vegas and how he sits and watches the men in his family. how they talk to each other and talk about each other. everything is not as it seems. and back at home there's still a child, so young, so innocent, so pure. his baby brother. but none of the displays of brotherhood he has seen thus far feel right. not of that of his dad and his uncle, nor of his cousins with each other, nor of his cousins with him and macau. and vegas has read about things like jealousy and envy and greed. has heard his mum tell him enough about how these things end up ruining relationships. who needs cain and abel, vegas thinks to himself sometimes.

and i think about young vegas and macau. and how the only form of love he's probably felt, been around and accustomed to is the affection he felt from his mum. from the only woman in his life.

thus, everything he knows about love, he associates with his mum. he's learnt from his mum. and what being on the receiving end of that love felt like for him: safe, warm, secure, strenghtening.

and when his mum is no more, she leaves behind macau for vegas, for him to love. for him to come back home to and remind himself how human he is. how gentle yet steady his hands are that feed macau and hold macau. how warm and open his chest is when macau nestles himself into it and finds comfort or sleeps. how soft and tender his mouth is when he kisses macau's face and speaks to him. how everyone is starting to call him his father's shadow but macau beams at him when he says that the way he lets him rest his head on his lap feels just like mum. and that means safe, warm, secure, strenghtening.

everything vegas knows about love, he associates with his mum. he's learnt from his mum. and she gave him macau. sometimes it feels like macau wasn't meant to be for his father, to have as his son. that macau was meant to be for vegas. to have as his brother, yes, but as a tether, more. and young vegas doesn't quite get that just yet, when he's so busy himself learning about how to be a capable and fit and proper mafia heir whilst raising macau into becoming someone his mother would be proud of. (this isn't about his father. macau has nothing to do with their father.).

but its on the days when vegas is much older and macau is much older too and vegas is more rattled and tired and monstrous in his ways and macau is more understanding and patient and has a lot more empathy than vegas does, and vegas comes home, and macau's there. and overtime, it seems to be that the tables have flipped. recently, vegas has found himself seeking comfort from macau a lot more. he feels like a child again, sometimes. but it comforts him seeing macau be their mother's shadow. that when vegas looks at macau, he sees their mum in him. in the way macau loves him, and in the way macau softens and smiles for him and in the way macau looks at him (not like a freak, despite knowing what he does, but like the sun, for how he loves so warmly).

and when macau loves him, vegas feels safe, warm, secure, strenghtening.

that is to say that everything vegas knows about love, he associates with his mum. he's learnt from his mum. and she gave him macau. sometimes it feels like macau wasn't meant to be for his father, to have as his son. that macau was meant to be for vegas. to have as his brother, yes, but as a tether, more.

and he hopes their mum is proud of them, vegas and macau, both.
