“Are we there yet?” You sighed loudly, your sneakers dragging along the steep dirt path. Redson was walking in front of you, holding a map of the hiking trail that apparently would lead to some kind of temple. You wished she would have just brought their fancy dirt bikes. This wasn’t exactly the ideal date environment, what with the sun at its peak in the sky and no chance of a breeze to cool you both off.

“No, not yet. Though if you keep complaining then maybe I’ll just go on my own.” He retorted. Their head turned to look at you over their shoulder, and you could see the empty threat he was making. Sure, Redson liked to talk down to you like they didn’t care, but that was just a mask. She loved you, and it showed whenever you two were alone. Even when you scraped your ankle on a rock earlier and they took care to make sure you were alright, and he even gave you a peck on the bandaid for good measure. 

“You wouldn’t leave me behind! It would be too much for you to bear!” You paused and pointed at a sign on the trail that warned of bears in a certain direction, not the one you two were headed however.

“Ugh. Just for that, I might.” Red groaned. They pinched the bridge of their nose. 

“You’re the one who confessed first!” You laughed at your own joke—someone had to—and continued following them. 

“That I did.”

The hike was coming to an end soon, you could tell. The path was more wide with some stones mixed in the dirt as if it were marked as the right way. 

However, before either of you could continue the light conversation that made the walk a little faster, Redson was yanked up by one of her ankles to hang from a tree. They yelped and you quickly tried to find a way to get them down. A spider-like figure appeared, swinging from a rope and snatching the map from her. 

“I’ll be taking that!” He laughed. You jumped as high as you could and grabbed onto one of his ankles. 

“Give that back!” 

He tried to shake you off, but in doing so he was distracted from where he was trying to go, so you both hit a different tree head on. It knocked the wind out of your lungs, but you still managed to grab the paper from him as you scrambled to get back to Redson. She had burnt the rope holding them, so now it was just a matter of losing this guy.

“That’s one of the Spider Queen’s henchmen! We need to get out of here!” They explained, grabbing your wrist and dragging you down a side path, away from the temple. You ran as fast as you could. 

“Leaving so soon? Oh well, I do like a challenge!” The hunter hissed from somewhere behind you. Redson tripped a little, but you held them up and turned to face the spider. He was gaining on you. Looking around, you saw a large branch on the ground. Without really thinking about it you grabbed it and swung it at him, even making some stabbing motions. It drove him back but not by much. In a last ditch effort, you discarded the branch and leapt onto him, trying to implement any fighting moves that you’d seen Redson use. It was surprisingly effective, despite you not having fire at your disposal. Redson was still standing in the spot you left her in, but now she was cheering you on.

“Yes! Beat his ass, love! Go for the throat!!” They yelled. You grinned and kept going until you knew for certain that the spider was knocked out. Then you got off him, wiping your brow with your arm.

“I guess in the end, he was the fly caught in our web!” You threw some finger guns at your partner, however they only sighed and started walking past you to get on the right path again.

“Annnnd the moment is gone.” 

“Hey! I won, right? I have the right to make a joke about it!”

“Whatever helps you sleep at night, beloved.”

They held one of your hands, pressing a kiss to your slightly bloody knuckles.

There were a large number of reasons you didn’t want to attend this ball with Redson. Not one of them was because you didn’t like Redson—if this were any other family dinner or regular date with just the two of you, it would be fine. One of them was because there would be other demons you know there. But the other, and arguably the more dramatic, was because you would have to dance…and that was terrifying to you. 

“Can you get this zipper for me? It’s stuck and I might just burn it if it doesn’t work.” Redson called from the bathroom. He was wearing a long dress with a slit along the side of it, with intricate patterns along the edge of the skirt itself. You blushed at how pretty he looked.

“There. It was only caught on the fabric. It didn’t pinch you, did it?”

“No, but the shoes might break my ankles if I’m not careful.”

He continued perfecting his hair and what not as you went to finish getting ready. Your outfit was tailored just for you, in your favorite color and style, and thankfully warm enough to withstand the almost winter weather in the area. You two had been on many fun shopping trips with Princess Iron Fan in order to pick everything out. 

“Are you alright? Your hands are shaking.” Redson was at your side now, a gentle hand on your shoulder. You didn’t mean to, but you jolted. 

“Ah, I’m fine. Just a bit anxious.”

“Well, when we get there, just stay with me. You’ll be fine.”

Oh no. Oh gosh. There were so many people here. They were all pretty wealthy. The place was huge, and you almost felt as if you had to pay to breathe in there. You wanted so badly to go visit the area of the hall where there were snacks and drinks. But you knew it was probably in your best interest to stick with your partner, lest you wander off and get lost.

“It’s almost time for the dance, y/n! Are you excited?” Red was smiling, squeezing your hands in his as you two could hear the band tuning their instruments.

“Red, I’ve got bad news.” You stared straight at the floor. Sweat was making your hands all gross. “I have no idea how to dance.”

“You don’t?”

“No. I’m sorry…”

“Don’t be sorry. I was going to take the lead anyways. And regardless of your skills,” He led you out onto the dance floor, alongside some other couples that were preparing to dance. “We will look stunning.”

He held out his hand to you. You took it gingerly and allowed him to guide you, moving so you were facing the right side of him. You two got your hands into position—this part you knew easily. You spotted Princess Iron Fan and Demon Bull King in the crowd, watching you. Oh gods.

Redson kept you focused, helping you to move in a box kind of shape to the beat. After some repetition you got the hang of it, and with a nod to your partner, you moved on to turning while doing the box shape. 

“See? Easy as pie,” Red muttered to you. “You’re a natural.”

“Only because you’re a good teacher.” You retorted.

You two were perfectly in sync now, and you forgot all about the crowd and the other people around you as you only focused on moving along with your partner, the love of your life. 

The dance ended and the crowd clapped. You and Red separated, bowing to each other like the other couples were doing. You went back into the crowd as a new set of dancers took your places, including Princess Iron Fan and DBK. 

“Now, you may think that was all fine and good. But all your worries about dancing are nothing compared to my father’s.” Redson whispered as the music picked up again. 

You held back your laughs as the married couple did their best. Though obviously Princess Iron Fan had more grace to work with than her husband.
