I have been rereading (well listening to audiobooks as I work) Prisoner of Azkaban and now Goblet of Fire, so my love for Sirius and the Marauders in general got back full force;; 

long wistful sigh

Do best friends do this?

Nico asks himself this more times than he’s willing to admit.

He’s been best friends with Will Solace for 3 months now, but lately, things have been… different.

He catches Will looking at him when he thinks Nico isn’t looking with this look in his eyes.

He notices Will sit next to him every chance he gets, and suspiciously close at that

He feels Will hold his hand and fiddle with his fingers more and more often

And best worst most confusing of all, whenever they’re alone together on his bed, Will cuddles him from behind, essentially big spooning him. One time he thinks Will lightly kisses the top of his head

Which brings him back to the question:

Do best friends do this?

Nico knows that his viewpoint on cultural norms is a tad bit outdated to say the least, but surely this is pushing it. right??

That’s what he’d think if the other campers weren’t so damn oblivious to it. None of them questioned a single head on Nico’s shoulder, hand on Nico’s thigh, campfire song dedicated to Nico

He tries to think back to when it started happening. He and Will were goofing around while picking strawberries…

“Throw one at me, I can catch it, I swear”

“Swear on what?”

“On your dad’s poor-unfortunate-soul-ified underwear.”

“I think that means if you miss, your soul will be sewn in it too”

“That’s how sure I am. And besides, I don’t think I’d mind as long as I get the part near his—”

“—Hey don’t hit me! This is violence! Abuse!”

“You’re abusing my mind!”

[laughter]

“Will! Will!”

“Lacey! Hey, what’s up?”

“Gods, I’ve been looking for you everywhere! The Aphrodite cabin was wondering if the Apollo kids were planning to skip capture the flag tonight”

“Oh yeah, same place as usual”

“Okay! And Nico, feel free to come too!! You two are like our cabin’s otp of the month”

“Oh, we’re not—”

“What does that mean?”

“Just that we think you guys are really cute.”

“Oh. Well, thank you.”

“Of course. Anyways, I gotta go. I’ll catch you guys later :)”

Nico didn’t think anything about it at the time, he just assumed it meant like… best looking or something! But now that he’s putting some thought into it… maybe he fucked up

He goes to the infirmary (as per usual) as soon as he wakes up the next morning (technically afternoon, but he digresses). This time, though, with an objective in mind

“Hey, death breath!”

“Don’t call me that.”

[chuckle] “You get any rest last night?”

There Will Solace went again, being so exceedingly caring. Who did that?? Well… then again, he was a doctor… so perhaps this was just a Will Thing™

“I slept my usual 11 hours.”

“Ah, but sleeping and resting are different. I’d expect you to know better considering that your favorite person in the whole wide world that you love with every fiber of your being and miss dearly whenever he’s not around is a doctor.”

“You’re so funny, you could be a comedian :|”

“I only say it like I see it”

“Sure. Anywho, speaking of you quote-unquote being my favorite person and whatnot… um, do you consider us best friends?” *oh gods i did not just ask that right now what in zeus’s name is wrong with me*

“What kind of question is that? Duh, of course we’re best friends. It’d be weird if we weren’t!”

“Okay yeah. That’s what I thought. It’s just that…”

“What?”

“No, forget it, it’s embarrassing”

“C’mon, you can’t just leave me hanging like that! Now I’m more curious! What???”

“Well… uh, you… um, sometimes act as if we’re… something other than best friends…”

“… what.”

“No, no, no, no, no, no, forget I ever said that!! Nevermind!! This never happened and we don’t have to bring it up again, I’m sorry—”

“Wait shut up for a second. This whole time you’ve thought we were just. Platonic best friends? Bros? Pals? Buddies? Mates?”

“I— I mean… yes?”

“WHAT THE FUCK NICO WHAT THE FUCK WHY WHAT HOLY SHIT OH MY FUCK NICO SHIT SHIT SHIT—”

“I’m sorry—!”

“WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU SORRY?? HOLY SHIT IM SORRY. IVE BEEN DOING ALL THESE THINGS WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT AND YOU JUST LET IT SLIDE?? PUNCH ME RIGHT NOW.”

“WHAT WHY WOULD I PUNCH YOU?”

“I THOUGHT WE WERE DATING”

“What?”

“I’M SORRY NICO, I’M SO SO SORRY, I THOUGHT THAT DAY IN THE STRAWBERRY FIELDS MEANT YOU THOUGHT SO TOO AND—”

“Will—”

“I HAD THE BIGGEST CRUSH ON YOU FOR THE LONGEST TIME AND I FEEL SO STUPID AND SO SO BAD—”

“Will—”

“AND I SHOULD’VE KNOWN, I SHOULD’VE GOTTEN DIRECT CONFIRMATION, I TOTALLY GET IT IF YOU DON’T FEEL THE SAME AND YOU NEVER WANT TO SEE ME AGAIN AND—”

“WILL.”

The stupid sunshine personification finally shut his mouth.

“I like you too.”

Nico wasn’t exactly sure what he was doing, but he took Will’s face in his hands, closed his eyes, and kissed him.

He swore he could feel warmth from where his hands cupped Will’s cheeks and when they finally parted, he caught a brief glimpse of an intense glow surrounding Will fade away

“… In more than a best friend way?”

Nico laughed. “Yes, you idiot. Was the kiss not enough?”

Will’s grin returned at that

“Oh look who’s talking Mr. Do-You-Consider-Us-Best-Friends after holding hands at the campfire yesterday”

“Hey, in my defense, girl best friends do that all the time! Piper and Annabeth hold hands and skip around all day long!”

“Yeah? Did they also cuddle last night until falling asleep in the same bed in an empty cabin against camp rules, and did Annabeth sing lullabies for Piper and kiss the top of her head, and did Annabeth make a dirty joke and see Piper visibly turn red despite being in pitch—”

“—Hey don’t hit me! You seriously have a problem, learn to control your temper please babe, this is a classic case of domestic violence which is really a very serious matter and—mmph.”

Nico kissed him again and quickly realized this was a much more effective and enjoyable solution to getting Will to shut his mouth than smacking his arm a million times

Once they finally broke off again, “Gods, I like you so much Nico. In more than a best friend way.”

“You’re never gonna let me live this down are you?”

“Never ever.”

“Good, I’ll never get tired of hearing it.”
