missing my tranquil walk home from the art school

a small child approaches you as you wait inside the duke's office in the fortress of meropide, with short wavy hair and glue and green eyes. you haven't really seen her around before, but she seems to know you. or at least, deems you safe enough to approach.

she has a scraped knee and a few scratches on her arms. as she tugs on the skirt of your dress, she looks like she's on the verge of tears.

"where's... where's uncle...?"

🥺🥺🥺 baby girl….

i immediately feel on edge, but not towards the small child. more like, i wonder where her parents or guardian might be - and sink to a squat so that i can meet her gaze. she’s beautiful, a cherub of a girl with round and red cheeks and a shy look on her face.

“hi sweetheart, im afraid i don’t know who your uncle is, but i do have a friend who can help me find him. would you like to wait with me?” i ask her in a soft voice, a smile tugging at my lips when she glances away and then back at me with a small nod.

“what’s your name?”

she looks at me for a moment.

“…dolasach”

“that’s a beautiful name.” i reply with sincerity.

i stand and offer her my hand, she doesn’t take it but instead her tiny hand stays glued to the skirts of my dress as she follows me to the couch posed in Wriothesley’s office. the table is ready for tea, cups and saucers, a tray of desserts, although i notice that the treats today are of a more colorful array - pink chiffon cakes and dollops of light green pistachio whipped cream on top of puddings. usually when i have tea with Wriothesley the foods are quite simple. i sit the little girl next to me and offer her a plate,

“i dont think my friend will mind if you have a snack, what do you like?” i urge gently, waiting for her to pick. she nibbles her lip, plucking a small cake…….her feet kicking back and forth on the couch while she takes a bite and licks chocolate from her upper lip, looking satisfied.

while she snacks i retrieve a first aid kit i know Wriothesley keeps stored away, kneeling before her and asking if i can clean up her scrapes. she nods again and shows me her minor injuries and together we wordlessly clean her up, her brave little face impressive to me but i do hope that when she fell she had someone around to comfort her.

she eats another bite of her cake. i grin, observing how the small child wipes her face with her sleeve and glances around the office.

she looks at me, her dual colored eyes enchanting along with her dark hair. i reach out and pat her head, she shys away in the slightest, but then reaches out to hold my skirt again, and yawns.

“you’re sleepy?”

“mhm…um…uh-uh. uncle said…i need a nap. but i don’t want to.” she says, shaking her head. she suddenly looks adorably droopy.

“Dolasach? Where are you…?” a familiar voice calls. the little girl perks up, hopping off the couch and runs to the top of the staircase. i stand just as Wriothesley appears and we lock eyes when the little girl grabs his hand and pulls on it.

“uncle. i had cake.” she admits. Wriothesley laughs and rubs at her head - a little roughly but she doesn’t seem to mind. he picks her up and she places her head on his shoulder.

“you still have to nap, kiddo. the cakes are for after that.”

“….okay. Gray is nice. she’s the one who gave me cake.” she yawns again.

i watch from my place still at the red velvet couch. Wriothesley knows we have some things to talk about. but for the moment, he needs to put the child to bed. my heart is going haywire, seeing him hold such a little thing and she clings to him despite holding a small air of timidity. i suddenly grow shy myself when he looks at me and smiles.

“yeah kid, i told you she was really nice.”

Oh? But what's dessert without the main course to really bring out its decadence?

Come here and lemme have a bite~

I would take you to the movies, but they don’t allow snacks.

Then we can stay at home and just watch a movie there. That way no one can stop us from eating our fill and having dessert too, yeah?
