I made a poll on my main tumblr blog asking whether or not I should draw Edwin wearing a skirt. I don’t know why I didn’t foresee the idea being so beloved! This idea was inspired by the scenes in Jill Thompson’s manga adaptation, where Edwin and Charles had to disguise themselves as girls to investigate at an all-girls’ boarding school. The pose was inspired by a scene in episode 2 of the show, where Edwin does a cute little twirl as he turns around to scold Crystal.

I made a huge mistake on this picture that I didn’t notice until after I drew, inked, painted, and scanned the whole thing! The hand behind him… it was backwards! His thumb was on the wrong side! I tried a couple digital methods to fix this, but in the end, I had to draw, ink, and paint an entirely new hand on a separate piece of watercolor paper, tape it over the bad hand, and scan him again! I had to do a bit of editing to get it to look seamless. I’m glad it managed to work out!

All in all, I think he turned out super adorable, and I’m glad I decided to draw this after all! It really emphasizes his soft, feminine side that I love. He looks so dainty and relaxed here, like he let his sternness blow away in the breeze.

I agree with both of these, that yes I’m glad she said something, but also yes, she went about it completely the wrong way. We also have to remember that what she said, in that moment, did NOT come from a helpful place. She didn’t say it to help him, she said it to HURT him. Deliberately. They were fighting, it was tit for tat. That’s why she apologized for it later in the episode.

That’s also why she threw in the line about her AND EDWIN walking on eggshells around Charles. It was a low blow ment specifically to hurt Charles. She knows, she’s seen, she’s experienced how protective of Edwin, Charles is. What’s the best way to make him hurt in this moment, the way his comment about David hurt her? To outright say that Edwin is afraid of him. That the person who’s opinion of him means the most, who he’s said, multiple times at this point, that he refuses to be separated from, who in just the last episode, he told her was one of only two things he needed to be happy (“my best mate and a case to solve”), is afraid of him.

That wasn’t a “girlboss” moment, it was a mean girl moment. She knows it, and she feels remorse for it. That’s what makes her a good friend, she knew she fucked up and she apologized for it.

Now, I also don’t think Edwin was walking on eggshells. They cut to Edwin’s reaction when this is said his face is basically, “Why am I being pulled into this?” He then cuts in to shut the argument down as soon as she finishes that sentence.

None of his behavior leading up to that moment implied to me that he was being careful with anything he said or did around Charles. He made the snide little remark about Charles falling for a living girl after he was told about the kissing. Right before that fight, he told Charles to GO AWAY, he literally said the words “go away”, and explained it was because he was acting out of character and too emotionally, “subtle is not an adjective that I would consider an attribute of yours lately.” In such a bitchy way too. Tact, your name is not Edwin Payne. And Charles just smiled a kind of “you’re a bitch” smile and walked away.

If Edwin was walking on eggshells, afraid of provoking him, that exchange would never have happened. But Edwin isn’t afraid of Charles and never was, he was worried for him. He offered to listen if Charles needed him to, but he’s so bad a people’ing he doesn’t know where to go from there. That’s why Crystal needed to be the emotional bulldozer.

My takeaway from this scene wasn’t, “Yea Crystal get him!” It was, she said what needed to be said, but did it the wrong way, said it the wrong way. She acted out of anger and hurt and moved to hurt him. But she REALIZED what she did, realized the hurt she caused, and she later tried to make it right. That’s what was compelling to me about her there.

I need to talk about the scene in episode 5 where Crystal confronts Charles about his anger problem. I saw another post where people were calling her a badass or a girlboss, and I interpreted the scene very differently.

If you don’t remember, she says “you walk around like the sun always shines and then you lost your shit while beating the Night Nurse. Edwin and I are walking on eggshells around you instead of just saying ‘what the actual fuck?’”

Keep in mind, she’s yelling this whole time. She isn’t saying “you have a problem and I’m here to help,” she’s saying “you are a problem and I need you to fix it.” And sure, Charles does have anger issues, but can you blame him?

And in this situation, he was being pretty reasonable. The Night Nurse showed him memories of senseless violence and then she pretty much threatened to send Edwin back to Hell. I get that she might not know all that, but that’s not really the point.

When I hear this speech, I pretty much see it as her saying that Charles is the same as his father. She’s saying that everyone around him is afraid of angering him, that they’re all walking on eggshells to keep him calm. That’s exactly how he described his relationship with his father. No matter how good he was, his father found something to be angry about. And that anger was something to be afraid of.

Later on in this same episode, Charles laments that he doesn’t want to be a bad guy. Brad and Hunter were bad guys, and Crystal pretty much called him a bad guy to his face. And I do think it’s part of the reason he rejects Edwin on the staircase. He’s afraid of turning into his father and hurting Edwin the same way his father hurt him and his mother. Crystal isn’t the only reason he feels this way, but she did feed into these fears.

Now, I know that Crystal has her own shit going on. Especially after the nightmare she had at the beginning of the episode where she saw Charles as David. I understand she’s a flawed character and I do love that about her. She makes mistakes and she can’t always fix them. Everyone in the show is deeply flawed and that’s what I love about it.

All I’m saying is that I didn’t think this scene was a girlboss moment. I think it was an example of how she can be judgemental and rigid.

Of course, I’m not saying anyone else is wrong for interpreting this scene differently. I just wanted to give my opinion, too

I keep forgetting to go back and check, but in episode 2, when Edwin told Charles to get the blue book from the shelf, and Charles grabbed the pink book… was that pink book the book about Paranormal Parasites that they ended up needing after all?
