Most of you were either not born or old enough to remember the 2006 Israeli war on Lebanon and the scale of the terror Israel inflicted. In 2006, Israel killed about 1,200 in Lebanon in 34 days which was the whole duration of the aggression. Yet, today alone, Israel killed close to 300 in Lebanon. This intensification is the direct result of the way Israel faced absolutely no consequences for its unprecedented violence in Gaza for a whole year.

[14/8/24] im writing these posts in a cafe while tryna tame some traces and texting my friends abt the impending doom of phd applications and *gasp* getting a job.
sure i love what i do but i have to remember that physics stares me down like some kind of magnificent beast. and it's hard to keep your resolve in spite of it all. if even the best can't make it, what does that say for the rest of us?

Extra post cause I'm learning Latin and I'm obsessed with translation at the moment. Languages are a big interest of mine, and as I'm planning on studying ancient religion for my postgraduate degree, Latin seemed like a great choice.
(For anyone interested, the text comes from 'Reading Latin: Text and Vocabulary' by Jones and Sidwell. Highly recommend if you need translation practice and want to build your vocabulary, but would need a grammar accompliment if you're a beginner or don't have a basic grasp of Latin sentence structure, cases and basic vocab).
If anyone else is learning Latin pls let me know, I'd love to talk to others learning cause it's not the most popular language, probs because it's dead lmao.
Study day 1/100

Notes: not the most productive day, I am still attempting to return to a serious study flowβ¦ From now onwards Iβll be quite occupied with meetings and committee preparations for the coming academic year, hopefully Iβll have some time to return to my art classes soon.

Got my DELF exam results back and I officially have the French B2 diploma!! I got an 81% and though I think I could have done better, I am just glad that the entirely nightmarish routine of reading 92728 articles and listening to 98228 podcasts about French sociopolitical problems everyday is gone! Now I just have to focus on Spanish and Italian in order to obtain the DELE and the CILSβ¦

study diary || 19th of August 2024

Languages: - Revised all of Russian A1 Grammar - Watched Hannibal in the Spanish Dub - Daily Spanish/French immersion
Academics: - Did some readings on the Kuhn vs Popper debate
Others: - Planning a future Translation Studies reading list
Currently reading: Babel - R. F. Kuang
currently reading 1984 by george orwell, and the parallels to england right now (and rising facism in europe as a whole, honestly) is harrowing. the idea that people who are unable to think are easier to control. the destruction of literature to reduce free thought (brings to mind the english rioters who literally burned libraries down).
i mentioned in a previous post that a large percentage of working/lower class populations are uneducated. education is made inaccessible by the government through insane tuition fees and student loans that'll take a lifetime to repay. the lower class are also unable to spend the time acquiring a degree and pursuing education because they have bills to pay. work or study, you can't do both.
the government ensures the lower-class remains in poverty, and what does the lower-class do? they blame people of colour, refugees, and immigrants for the lack of jobs. it's not poc that makes it hard for you to get the job. it's the rich. it's the system working as it was designed to do. throw in the fact that white people have been voting tories into leadership for the past DECADE due to the tory government's racist and anti-migrant promises (which they never delivered on lmao), of course you're struggling to make ends meet. it's ouroboros: the serpent biting its own tail.
the way this anger and rage over the cost of living, the lack of jobs, and employability are very valid concerns, but rather than address those concerns productively, you're attacking poc?? aka, the people who are in the EXACT same boat as you. if not a worser boat because they're having to expend double, if not triple, the amount of energy to make a living in this country because they're black, asian, or a refugee.
people who say literature is unimportant, a literature degree is a "waste"......if the far-right racists who are rioting in england had access to literary studies, these riots wouldn't exist.

[29/7/24] I thought I had a good work-life balance by not posting on weekends, but here I am in my office at 10pm. I felt quite cornered at home so I just headed back to my desk in the physics building to atleast feel productive. Caught a great sunset on the way though!
W I took: I got VSCode configured right for LaTeX finally. L I took: I don't see how the hypothetical particle I've been looking at would change the observable in a meaningful way. I tried a whole BUNCH of coupling constants and masses at various energies. Am I just stupid, or is it really not a viable direction?
I'm thinking of doing the 100 days of productivity challenge because the end of summer is really near and I NEED to do grad app stuff (I've been putting it off because I'm scared.)
i still believe that i can hear the ocean when i put a seashell to my ear. i still believe that the moon is following me when i'm in the car. i still believe there are fairies living in the garden. i still believe in those fabled creatures from my old storybooks. i still believe in true love. i will carry the magic of my childhood with me forever and it will keep me gentle.

2nd of July, Tuesday
Wrote five French compositions
Did 3 oral presentations in French
Read some C1 articles
Watched some videos about exam themes
Organised some future academic goals
Participated in a study for people studying more than one foreign language
Notes of the day:
- I still have a 5 hour shift as a student ambassador to complete before being freed from university for the rest of the summer. Recently I did two 8 hour shifts back to back and my energy was drained from working at open days and at the summer school though I adored speaking with people interested in pursuing physics at university.
- I still have another shift to complete and I have to also finish some paperwork as I will be a mentor next year for new students -_-
- My French examination is also looming in the back of it all. I am quite content with finishing it as quickly as possible so I can start preparing myself for the Italian exam I will have next year.
- Recently Iβve found an independent coffee shop where they sell traditional Greek coffee and I cannot wait to go back. Grainy coffee is truly my only source of pleasure.
Huge day for Conservation enthusiasts!!
