There’s a creek not far from Steve’s home that he remembers going to with his nanny when he was younger. She taught him how to skip stones and they made boats out of logs, seeing who could make their log go the furthest.
As he grows up, he spends less time at the creek, choosing friends, girls, and parties over spending time in the woods adjacent to his backyard.
Steve finds himself back at the creek after the events of Starcourt. He almost forgot about it until he went out to clear his head and the sound of rushing water, leaves rustling, and birds chirping was surprisingly calming.
His walks through the woods became more frequent after that. He’d go on his days off and used the alone time to clear his head.
The first person to go to the creek with him since his nanny did all those years ago was Robin. It had been a rough night for both of them so Steve suggested she join him on his walk. The rustling of the leaves scared her, but Steve’s company was able to keep her grounded.
They go together often enough after that, but Steve usually goes alone.
That is until one particular rough night for both Steve and Eddie. Eddie had skipped the phone call and showed up on Steve’s doorstep in tears, almost knocking him over as he jumped into his arms the moment Steve answered, gripping on tightly and letting out a broken sob.
“Th-they… I didn’t make it time. Y-you were… Fuck Steve there was so much blood.” He chokes out.
“I’m here. I’m okay. You’re okay. There’s no blood Eddie. Hey. Hey? We’re safe okay. Come here.”
Steve’s body shakes as he tries to calm Eddie down. He leads him upstairs and gets him a warm rag to press against his neck and lays down next to him, wrapping his arms around him in a warm and safe embrace. Eddie cries himself back to sleep as Steve gently rubs his back.
The next morning is still rough for both of them. Eddie still can’t talk about the nightmare without freaking himself out all over again.
Steve sighs, suggesting they go for a walk. Eddie follows him into the backyard and into the woods. They take in the fresh air and try to let the feeling of being in nature take over. He leads Eddie to the creek and sits down on a large boulder, signaling for him to sit down next to him.
Eddie hesitates, but quickly follows through. They sit with their shoulders touching, taking in the scenery around them. Steve takes a deep breath in, holds, then exhales. Eddie catches on and starts copying Steve’s breathing.
Once they feel calmer, Steve hops down and finds a stone, aiming it just right that he’s able to release it and watch as the stone skips across the creek. Eddie wades into the water, allowing himself to feel the cool water around his legs. It’s freeing. He waits until Steve turns to find another rock and splashes water in his direction, successfully hitting the small of his back.
Steve lets out a yelp and Eddie can’t help but laugh. Steve throws the rock into the water and splashes back at Eddie. Before they know it they’re in the middle of a water fight as they wade through the creek.
It comes to an end when Steve finally catches up to Eddie and tackles him, sending them both falling into the water and Steve landing on top of Eddie. It’s shallow enough that they don’t go fully under. They fall into a fit of laughter and though there’s a moment where Steve looks down at Eddie’s lips, he quickly gets up and helps him up.
Now both soaked practically head to toe, Eddie splashes Steve once again before reaching out and pulling him in, following through with the kiss that was bound to happen eventually.
Despite the freezing water, Steve feels himself warm up instantly as their lips meet, a course of electricity flowing through the both of them. He kisses back, wrapping his arms around Eddie and revels in the moment.
They giggle as they part, helping each other back to shore. They take their shirts off and try to get as much of the water out as possible before heading back home to change and warm up.
There’s a creek by Steve’s house he went to when he was little. Now all these years later, it’s become his favorite spot to go with his boyfriend. It’s where they shared their first kiss after a hard night. It’s where they both feel free.
IM OBSESSED WITH THIS EVERYONE GO LOOK

It's not amazing but here he is. Ghibli-style Eddie.
It's mermay so I'm having so many thoughts about siren Eddie trying to lure captain Steve off his ship, but he doesn't realise that Steve is deaf.
Steve knows about Eddie; he's had to stop quite a few of his men from jumping overboard to be with the beautiful siren. He spends so many days just leaning on the railing of his ship, gazing down at Eddie with a triumphant smile because he knows Eddie can't affect him, well, with his singing that is. He definitely affects Steve in other ways. Steve nearly toppled overboard just last week because he was too busy watching Eddie twirl a sword he no doubt stole while lounging on a rock, his gorgeous black tail glinting in the sun.
Eddie gives up trying to lure the captain into the sea after a month, but that doesn't mean he stops visiting the ship. He starts getting bolder. He throws stones in the captain's general direction to get his attention before proudly showing off the big fish he caught, only to get a confused sort of laugh from the man. He expected at least a clap or a thumbs up.
One morning, he spies the small boat that is usually hoisted up high on the side of the ship, in the water and he climbs inside, his tail too long so it hangs off the side while he waits. He nearly gives the captain and crew a heart attack when they finally pull it back up and find him lounging in the small boat with a rather large knife and lazy smile.
"I think you dropped this." Eddie grins at the captain, his sharp teeth causing several crew members to step back. He holds out the knife that he saw the man clumsily drop into his waters months ago. He is feeling generous. He'd normally keep treasures like that for himself.
"Thank you." Steve says with a soft smile. The warmth of his fingers shocks Eddie when he gently grabs the knife from his hand.
Eddie watches curiously as Steve turns to one of his crew mates, hands her the knife and then starts talking with his hands, well, that's what Eddie assumes is happening because the girl nods in understanding and rushes off to do whatever the captain said. He turns back to Eddie with a bright smile but Eddie can't stop staring at his hands. What was that?
"My name is Steve. What's your name?" Steve says the words out loud and with his hands, it both confuses and intrigues Eddie.
"Teach me that." He rushes out and points at Steve's hands, completely ignoring the captain's question.
Steve tilts his head in confusion, his brows furrowed and his eyes focused on Eddie's lips. His stare makes Eddie feel squirmy and he curls his lip to reveal sharp teeth to show Steve he doesn't like the attention. The captain doesn't get the memo and just stares harder.
"Talk slower. I can't hear you." He points to his ear and suddenly everything makes sense. Why Steve wasn’t affected by his song, why he didn't hear the crew screaming in the night when they were attacked last week. Eddie had almost been ready to climb aboard to wake the sleeping captain but the girl with the short hair had gone to fetch him just in time.
Eddie grabbed the edge of the small boat he was in and leaned closer to Steve, he was very aware that if the crew let go of the rope he'd go crashing back down to the sea but none of them moved. All their eyes watched the strange exchange between their captain and the siren that had been following them like a shadow.
"Teach me how to talk to you. I want to learn." And he does. Something about this human intrigues him. Why else would he follow him across the sea? If he were anyone else, Eddie would have slit his throat and dragged him down to the depths by now, but this captain is special.
He's decided that Steve will be his and his alone. Eddie always gets what he wants and what he wants is to learn Steve inside and out. Which includes learning this new language.
"OK, I'll teach you." Steve says with a nod.
Eddie smiles triumphantly, his sharp teeth on full display. "Great. Lessons start now." He looks pointedly at the space across from him in the small boat and Steve only hesitates for a moment before awkwardly climbing in.
"Tie it off and get back to work." He yells out to his crew without taking his eyes off Eddie, whose long tail is curled behind Steve. They sit in tense silence, Eddie's long nails tap tap tapping on the side of the boat before Steve sighs and says, "We'll start with the basics."
"Whatever you say, Captain."
The language is hard and Steve often laughs at Eddie when he angrily shakes his hands when he doesn't get the sign right.
But Eddie's determined to get it right because he's now one step closer to getting what he wants, and what he wants is Steve all to himself.
Eddie is easily jealous this Eddie is jealous that. yOu're riGht! I agree with the headcanon of Eddie being super protective of his relationship cause of the 'novelty' of actually being in one, plus the hints of obsessiveness in his personality. He'd totally leave marks of possessiveness all over Steve (his ring, his necklace etc) and be very vocal/snappy at wandering eyes at clubs, safe outings and such.
But hear me out! Steve being just as jealous!! except where Eddie is all narrowed eyes and sharp remarks, pulling Steve closer and daring others to approach, my guy is so much more subtle about it.
Steve's the kind of guy to watch it happen at first, to witness his clueless ass bf get hit on and not even realize it (Its actually frustrating how unaware he is of his own attractiveness sometimes). He doesn't dive in like Eddie would, just lets the jealous feeling turn into technique. Cause as much as it's annoying to watch, it also gives him immense satisfaction to break the little hearts of people who think they actually have a chance.
The thing is, Steve knows Eddie like the back of his hand, knows that when he worries his bottom lip between his teeth long enough, no matter what his boyfriend is doing, his eyes will eventually drift down to stare. Steve knows just how feral Eddie gets whenever he looks up through his lashes, knows the right angles to dip his head so Eddie gets distracted by the exapanse of his neck. If he folds his arms a certain way, he knows those large eyes will fixate on them, when he pretends to stretch, it's with just enough curve in his spine. He can steal his boyfriends attention in his sleep, and better yet, won't even seeming like he's trying to.
It's always over in a matter of minutes, one second Eddie is conversing energetically with the poor, hopeful soul, and the next his words are reduced to shorter, barely comprehensible phrases as he sneaks painfully obvious glances at his boyfriend. A few more minutes and Eddie will politely excuse himself, hand finding Steve's lower back or arm as he desperately leads them away.
Each and everytime, without fail, Steve turn to look over his shoulder, a small victorious smirk on his lips as he takes in the different variations of defeat on the enemy's face.
It never stops being satisfying.
Eddie: I'm adopting the life style of a goat.
Steve: which is?
Eddie: Eat what I want, do what I want, and ram my head into anyone who challenges me
Steve: Are you sure that's healthy?
Eddie: ... *charges at him*
