To add something as a Chinese-Mongolian adopted in America. I’ve always loved Mulan as I saw it as a window into the past and my heritage. So my hcs for me relate to that heritage and being trans masculine (demiboy)

Basically in Chinese culture calling someone by a familial title is to show respect. I feel Mulan would call yuu xiǎodì or dìdì (little brother) while Yuu would call Mulan dàjiě or jiějiě (big sister). Mulan would teach yuu how to use a sword and specific exercises for strength. As well as how to use a spear.

Shang would also be called dàgē or gēgē (big brother) he’d be very accepting trans masc yuu and be a protective big bro showing the ropes and protecting them from the dudes.

Yao, Ling and Chien-Po would be glad to have another dude friend and would be a one brain cell uncle trio.

Mushu would probably cry if yuu told them that they had an orange and red dragon plush they named Mushu. He would deny it tho definitely. Cricket would be wholesome lucky friend.

Grandma Hua, Baba & Mama Hua (I’m using the traditional Chinese name b/c the book by Grace Lin did so, it was so much better than the live action while still being mythically/historically authentic/accurate)

Would basically be cool with having a grand/great grand child. Grandma would push Yuu to be himself like a wholesome supportive ally grandparent. Baba & Mama would also be accepting, I see a wholesome family dynamic where Mulan basically unofficially adopts Yuu and they teach him about their stories and culture and my Chinese adopted heart is made whole.

As for Shan Yu, coming from a generally central Asian background he would be slightly confused at first by Yuu’s enthusiasm for meeting him but once explaining my mixed heritage he would also teach me things. Most likely horseback riding on generally much smaller horses than European ones and falconeering. Maybe getting my own falcon to reunite with every season as Mongolian falconers train a while falcon for a season then release them repeating the cycle every season.

I feel Shan Yuu and the Hua family would come to a compromise like divorced parents over prioritizing the next generation’s future over their past war.

Hope it’s not to much to ask or maybe you’ve already done this but what do the Mulan cast think or act around yuu?

I don't really know that much about Chinese culture so I can't get too specific about things so here's some general headcanons:

Mulan thinks she's awesome. I've said it before but she teaches Yuu self defense since she's the only girl in NRC and is protective of her. I sort of have two versions of this AU - the main one being that everyone that everyone knows that Yuu is a girl from the get-go but if she hid her gender, Mulan would be even more protective over her and would bond with her about that.

Shang and Mulan's war buddies would consider her a cute little sister that they must protect. They actually come up with ways to increase her physical fitness and tell Coach Vargas how to help train her so that she can be strong enough to take down anyone that messes with her.

Mushu and Cri-Kee treat her the same way the other heroic sidekicks like Abu and Pegasus treat her. They consider her a youger sister and are very protective over her (I think Cri-Kee is on the younger side like Flounder so he'd definitely look up to her and try to give her some of his good luck). Mushu is a MalleYuu shipper because he supports his fellow dragons.

Grandma Fa absolutely adores her. She usually hangs out with the other funky old sages like Rafiki, Mama Odie and Merlin (and Lilia) and they talk about cool old people stuff.

Shan Yuu has great respect for her since the Huns, like in Leona's kingdom, have a high regard for women. His falcon, Hayabusa likes to sit on her shoulder despite being like half her size which stirs up a lot of trouble with the other Disney birds.

Adam & Marigold, similar in species, one created through science the other via ritual!

Marigold has two last names, “Cervidae” from his bio parent and “Crowva” from his adopted dad.

This version of “Adam” is named Rose, a creation of Oak Jayvid as a “proof of concept” for his “partner” to “create life.” Adam here was basically a first test, and Oak’s “partner” didn’t like how stitched together he looked.

Oak tried to create the perfect man, neglecting his niece and wife to create life. Adam was kept in the basement until his niece Thistle found him and they formed a friendship. Thistle teaching him how to speak and write and Oak letting him out so they can watch each other. Adam as a bodyguard and caretaker, and Thistle as a teacher and companion.

Anyway that just came to me working out the dynamic and stuff. Thistle becomes betrothed to Marigold and Adam is really supportive for them.
