I have so many questions about John Herschel and Anna Hanover. And I may have fallen down another research rabbit hole to try to find out more about them. And this is all information about the real person John Herschel, some of which is incorporated into the pulp character and some of which isn't, but did you know:

-John was born in England, but his father William was from there German Town Hanover and immigrated to England. (Like, he literally changed his name from Wilhelm Friedrich to William). William's sister Caroline also came with him to England. She was also an incredible astronomer, and the first woman to be paid to do science.

-the person Anna Hanover doesn't exist, but I'm positive this connection is what inspired the character's last name. That and the fact that both John and William were knighted by the Hanoverian Guephalic Order. There was a huge scandal about the validity of that knighthood. William literally discovered a planet in our solar system. Like, Rose wasn't exaggeration when she called him a legendary astronomer. But he wasn't British enough to be knighted by the British crown.

-In my mind, Anna's family was also originally from Germany and immigrated to the US at some point, and changed the spelling from Hannover (which is how it's spelled in German) to Hanover. The idea that distant relatives of Anna are the ones handing out knighthoods to the Herschels is also really funny to me.

-oh, and you know that royal astronomical society Rose mentions? William was the first president of it. And Caroline also got a gold medal from it in 1828. Technically they didn't officially let her in, but they did make her an honorary member in 1835, along with Mary Somerville. I'd like to imagine those are the women Rose is excited about.
