I was diagnosed with autism when I was 3 years old, and have known about my diagnosis my entire life. My friend, on the other hand, was assessed as a child but never told until recently.

Neither of us grew up feeling "normal". We were both outcasted and ostracised by peers, both struggled with education, and both struggled with extracurriculars. All of the adversities that come with being autistic, we both faced. That isn't changed by the fact that one of us was aware of our diagnosis, and the other wasn't.

The difference though, was that I knew why I struggled with these things, I understood that how I experienced the world was different from my peers. I understood that I wasn't the problem, the problem was the world that couldn't accommodate for anyone different. He didn't.

I consider myself really fortunate for having been diagnosed at such a young age, and for being made aware of my disability. I'm sorry to anyone who didn't get the resources or accommodations they needed growing up.

Parents, tell your kids about their disabilities or differences.

Not telling your kid they have a learning disability, chronic illness, mental illness etc. so they can “feel normal” actually does the opposite. They will not feel normal if they do not have the context to understand that their normal will be different from that of their peers.
