The high-tech world is literally stuck in → snow. These catastrophic snowstorms are also known as → blizzards. In addition to snow, they bring icy → wind, the dreaded freezing rain and permafrost. In the north and north-east of the USA, heavy snowstorms rage almost regularly. These blizzards are usually preceded by mild weather. They are caused by strong cold air intrusions from the north and north-west at the rear of low-pressure areas. The icy winter storms are heralded by a slow drop in air pressure and rapidly falling temperatures. The wind reaches gale force with wind speeds of between 60 and 75 km/h.
