As an artist, what are your thoughts on AI? Do you think it could be a helpful tool if used properly?

Hello! This is definitely an interesting question.

I do think there is a place for AI, but as an assistive tool, and not as a replacement for the creative process. We use AI already in a lot of digital art programs for things like background removal and photo editing.

However current AI trends are not about that. Using AI to generate entire completed images, while a fun gimmick, should absolutely NOT be used to replace real humans in the creative fields, and the current method for training AI models is unethical and outright theft. The arts and the act of creation is what makes us human in the first place. It gives us avenues for expression and reason to live, not just survive. It is the foundation of all culture, and to normalise the use of AI in order to keep up with modern consumption trends is to strip ourselves of our humanity. Art becomes meaningless and souless when not created by human hands.

As an assistive tool for certain tasks within the creative field, as an aid within scientific and medical fields to help with problems and processes which are vital but difficult to perform, and in order to improve quality of life, yes. I think there is a place for AI.

In terms of using AI to create "finished" artwork, animation, music, writings etc and to replace the jobs of real life artists... no, I am against AI and what it is currently doing to the creative industry and our desire to create for ourselves.
