It starts perfectly innocent, with two friends catching up over late afternoon brunch.  You meet at your favourite restaurant - the place you had your first date, your second anniversary, your last birthday - and you order the same things you always do:  some kind of eggs benedict for him and something sweet for you.   

You ask about his mother’s wrist and his father’s golf game;  he tells you they’re both fine and that his brother’s dog might as well be their new grandchild.  He wants to know if you’ve gotten that promotion you so deserve yet, or if your sister’s finally decided on names for her soon-to-be-born twins.  No, you haven’t, and no, she hasn’t.

You offer little pieces of news like you do bits from your plate, trading a strawberry for one of his duck fat fried potatoes.  The conversation flows as easily as the coffee drains.  

It’s never uncomfortable or rushed or any of the million other things meetings with your exes tend to be.

It’s late in the evening - the sun low on the horizon, its light illuminating the sky in darkened shades of gold and amber. The sea under the skyline is calm, the lulled waves rocking back and forth across the surface. He’s a long way from home. Jungkook knows this. He’d left his small house when it was still bright - the sun overhead - and now, that same sun is lowering over the horizon. He knows he only has a few hours before dusk breaks and the sky is bathed in the dark hues of twilight. Nevertheless, Jungkook hops from rock to rock with experienced practice, each movement confident and skilled as he continues hiking along the jagged terrain of the sea cliffs near his town.

He hasn’t been out for a hike in a while. Mainly, because he’s practically explored every cave, cavern, and trail that surrounds his little seaside hometown of Jeju. Today, however, he’d felt particularly antsy and knew he just needed to get out of the house, wander along the cliffs by himself, and take a breather. More than that, however, was that something about today had been calling out to him. There was an inexplicable pull deep within him, one that yearned for him to leave his home. Jungkook considers himself an experienced hiker. In fact, there’s no one else who knows the area better than him. Though, with the low setting sun, he knows he’s now further than he’s ever been.

Jungkook has no idea where he is. He doesn’t know where he’s walking to or why his feet, despite aching from how far he’s walked from home, continue their wayward journey. No, Jungkook doesn’t know where he’s going or why he’s going there. He just knows he wants to, and he’s never been one to not follow his heart. Thus, he lets his legs guide him towards wherever his destination is. Every now and then, he stops to take in the scenery and breathe in the beauty that surrounds him.

The flowers you appraised with indifferent eyes at the florist’s that day. Flowers are beautiful but like many beautiful things, they wither just like the eye that looks upon it. Hence, your captor’s doe eyes and cherry-pink lips do not deter you. Yes, he was easier on the eyes. It really made things much easier for you.

“Pink peonies symbolise love at first sight,” your friend had said. She was the florist, the only reason why you were standing in the shop of flowers that day. 

You gazed upon the fresh flower and its unbridled petals. “No wonder it’s so overwhelming,” you smiled. “So much happening at once, it’s difficult to pinpoint that it’s not love at all.” 

Your friend had rolled her eyes, knowing very well that you didn’t believe in love at first sight. 

But your captor certainly did. 

There was an abundance of pink peonies in the room you were trapped in. Four walls freshly painted in a shade of your favourite colour. A vanity table littered with your holy grail of beauty products. The spines of your beloved books stood tall on mahogany shelves. You could smell the paint and books just like the blood on his hands and your favourite perfume spritzed on his ivory-white collar.

How adorable, you thought.

He looked adorable. He really did. On his knees with a plate of food. Hand hovering in the air with a silver spoon. He chewed on his bottom lip while staring at you with his sickeningly sweet chocolate brown eyes.
