The soft crackle of the fire is the only sound breaking the deep silence. It smoothly cuts through the murky atmosphere of the night, and the sight of its origins is just as mesmerizing: waves of blazing fire helplessly reach out towards the sky, weak and strong, the flames rising aimlessly as they sway amongst the smoke.

Sitting there, alone and surrounded by trees and the calming waves of the bonfire, is numbing enough to make time still. The temperatures are low enough for a crisp breeze to tickle your cheeks, seeping through the layers of your clothes as your hands seek for warmth against each other. You can almost pretend you’re completely on your own, that voices are not coming closer and that the sound of hearty laughter isn’t overpowering the eerie quietness of nature.

The first time you’re acquainted with Jeon Jungkook is while gazing out of the library’s window, it’s summertime which for most meant it was time to get outside and enjoy the warm weather, you, however, were stuck needing to make money for college at the expense of your hot girl summer. It was a little past noon but you were ready to tap out, the pout on your lips deepens at the thought of having to spend another six hours under the uncomfortably cold air con and sticky leather swivel chairs. 

The sigh the leaves your lips is loud enough for some of the hybrid patreons nearby to turn and look at you, and you mutter out a sheepish apology before resuming your staring out the window. You’re just about to go back to pouting when you find slitted pupils staring back at you through the window glass, expanding when they catch your gaze before contracting again back to slits and you just about shit yourself at the sight of them.

Reverof is a quaint little town located on the shores of a large freshwater lake, one of the largest in the world. Settled back in a bygone era, known as the early stages of the industrial revolution, it has long past its steel producing, machine manufacturing days and has now become a top vacation destination due to its invitingly mild weather and stunning natural scenery. People from all over the country flock to Reverof annually, spending their holiday weekends camping by the mountainside, hiking through its charming forest trails, gazing at its magnificent waterfalls, and sailing on the surface of the lake’s ocean-like vastness.

The lake was so big; the other side of the shore was not visible to the naked eye. Anybody visiting would think Reverof was just like a city by the ocean, and being a lakeside town, it did have most of the attractions a seaside port city would offer, but of course there were a couple of differences here and there. Reverof didn’t have rocky cliff shores that jut out to be met with aquamarine waves, but instead pine tree covered slopes that gradually reached out into the clear water. It didn’t provide the signature salty breeze and blushing beaches at sunset, but it did have the gentle musky scent of a forest after the rain and colorful pebble covered shorelines.

He knows he only has a few hours before dusk breaks and the sky is bathed in the dark hues of twilight. Nevertheless, Jungkook hops from rock to rock with experienced practice, each movement confident and skilled as he continues hiking along the jagged terrain of the sea cliffs near his town.

He hasn’t been out for a hike in a while. Mainly, because he’s practically explored every cave, cavern, and trail that surrounds his little seaside hometown of Jeju. Today, however, he’d felt particularly antsy and knew he just needed to get out of the house, wander along the cliffs by himself, and take a breather. More than that, however, was that something about today had been calling out to him. There was an inexplicable pull deep within him, one that yearned for him to leave his home. Jungkook considers himself an experienced hiker. In fact, there’s no one else who knows the area better than him. Though, with the low setting sun, he knows he’s now further than he’s ever been.

Jungkook has no idea where he is. He doesn’t know where he’s walking to or why his feet, despite aching from how far he’s walked from home, continue their wayward journey. No, Jungkook doesn’t know where he’s going or why he’s going there. He just knows he wants to, and he’s never been one to not follow his heart. Thus, he lets his legs guide him towards wherever his destination is. Every now and then, he stops to take in the scenery and breathe in the beauty that surrounds him.
