The Free Collection

The Free Collection

E. Boniface Neumann, de-anthropomorphic-culture charlatan and scientist-showman extraordinaire defined his time as the radical curator of the era's unique Natural History collection. In his own words, "The Free Collection brings together the bounty of this age of exploration, which comes to us in cages, and liberates it once again. For just as the explorer has liberated the cannibal from the prison of isolation, obscurity, and ignorance, only to introduce him to the kingdom of his bars, so I strike off the lock, throw ope the gate, and bid him feast on brains fatted with the knowledge of oceans, stars, ancient graves, recent wars, the latin names of hallucinogenic weeds, and white women." Indeed, Neumann did just this, buying up specimens from the furthest flung expeditions, and freeing them to roam the marble halls of the "Free Collection," where scientists came to study at their own considerable risk.
